You Have Come to Mt Zion
By Pastor Larry R. Lasiter
One day as Jesus was passing through Samaria, He met a woman at a well. After a brief conversation the woman asked Jesus why the Jews insist that God must be worshiped at the Temple in Jerusalem. She went on to say that her forefathers had worshiped God on a nearby mountain. Jesus gave an astonishing reply saying, -
"Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. . .But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:22-14)
Later, in His ministry Jesus prophesied that the Temple in Jerusalem would be destroyed and left desolate. (Matt. 23) This occurred in 70 AD when the Romans conquered the city and destroyed the Temple. So the time was fast approaching when worshiping God at the earthly Temple was going to be impossible.
This was quite radical! The woman must have been wondering exactly what all this meant even saying,
"Messiah is coming and He will declare (explain) all things to us."
Israelites have always gone to a place such as a mountain, or to the Tabernacle in the wilderness or later to the Temple in Jerusalem. God had met Moses at Mt. Sinai as a burning bush and had summoned Israel to the same mountain to hear His voice. But Jesus was proclaiming that the time of this type of worship was coming to an end and that a new form of worship would transcend earthly mountains and buildings. In this new Covenant God was inviting His true worshipers to literally enter through the veil into His presence in the Heavenly Mountain of God, Zion. And greater still, as they would later learn, God would make His abode in the Temple of human hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit.
There is a connection with worshiping in spirit and in truth with the holy convocation of the New Testament Church. When we ponder
Hebrews 12:18-29
it compels us to reconsider our Sabbath services. Certainly we have long understood the holiness and weightiness of the Sabbath and of the holy convocation. But as we carefully sift through this passage it seems as though we transcend our station on the earth and enter through the veil into the heavenly.
Contrast Between Sinai and Zion
The passage is showing the contrast between when Israel gathered before Mt Sinai to met their God, and of born again saints coming to Mt Zion to offer to God an acceptable offering of service. Israel came to a mountain that could be seen and touched, though they were forbidden to come so close as to touch the mountain. Paul says,
"But you have come to Mt Zion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and Church of the Firstborn who are enrolled in Heaven, and to God."
Because we do not actually see these things doesn’t mean that we are not actually there. A shadow is sometimes all we see. But a shadow reveals that there is a reality that we do not see-a reality that is very near. God had long given shadows of the Heavenly. Moses was instructed to carefully build the Tabernacle because it represented a Heavenly reality. Shadows are not the substance but they do reveal that there is a substance. God has used shadows and the observance of them to teach His people the holiness of the Heavenly realities.
Isaiah’s Spiritual Eyes Opened
Isaiah entered the Temple in Jerusalem many times seeing only the earthly shadow without seeing the heavenly reality. But one day when he stepped into the Temple He saw the Lord high and lifted up. Isaiah’s natural, material eyes were closed and his spiritual eyes were opened to peer into the eternal realm. He didn’t go beyond the veil to see God in the stone Temple, he was transported into the heavenly temple. Isaiah was in the courtyard of the earthly Temple, but suddenly his spiritual eyes were opened to see what was always there, the Temple in Heaven. It changed his life. He saw himself as unclean for the first time. He suddenly understood the value of being cleansed by the Lord. God opened Isaiah’s spiritual eyes as He had opened the eyes of Gehazi, Elisha’s servant. At Mars Hill, Paul said that God does not dwell in temples made with hands, and that God is not far from each one of us. (Acts 17)
Isaiah was not a priest of Levi. Nor was he a son of Aaron, the High Priest. Not being a Priest, Isaiah was not qualified to enter the Holy of Holies under the Sinai Covenant. The Sinai Covenant had an ordained Priesthood of the tribe of Levi to perform the various priestly duties. And from the tribe of Levi, only the sons of Aaron were permitted to enter through the veil into the presence of God. But Isaiah was not merely a member of the Israelite family, but as a part of the great cloud of witnesses, he was born of the Spirit and was also an heir of Abraham’s Covenant of Promise. Because of this he was a member of the Priesthood of Melchizedek, an eternal Priesthood which was greater than Levi and Aaron, and which also preceded them.
When God shut his natural eyes and opened his spiritual eyes Isaiah was able to see past the shadows and experience the reality of what was occurring in the eternal realm. He could see the Lord sitting on His glorious Throne and the Heavenly hosts. For the first time he understood that he was sitting in Heavenly Places with the Lord. Paul understood this truth well, "But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ, and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the Heavenly Places in Christ Jesus." (Ephesians 2:4-6)
Sarah’s Spiritual Eyes Opened
During a Friday night Praise and Prayer service my middle daughter Sarah was moved by the Spirit to lay on her face in prayer. The congregation was in worship singing "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace."
When she was moved to lift up her face and open her eyes it wasn’t her natural eyes that opened, it was her spiritual eyes. As she looked she saw transparent, flesh colored veils and Jesus seated on His Throne beyond. The veils were glistening and were gently being gathered at the sides so as to open up before her. She could see people as far as the eye could see in worship and praise. The angels were also in worship and she could sense that the "great cloud of witnesses" were also there. And they were all singing the Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus song in perfect unison with our congregation. The members of our congregation were singing praise in perfect unison with the
"general assembly and Church of the Firstborn"
and with the Heavenly Host, though only Sarah knew because her spiritual eyes were opened to see and experience the reality of the eternal realm.
To the rest of us it appeared that our congregation was alone having services in our sanctuary in Russellville. But it seems that in the Spirit we were fulfilling what Jesus had spoken to the Samaritan woman at the well-worshiping God in Spirit and in Truth - and not on an earthly mountain or an earthly city, but in the Jerusalem above on the heavenly Mt. Zion.
Gehazi’s Spiritual Eyes Opened
There is an interesting story in 2 Kings Chapter 6. The king of Aram was warring against Israel and each time he brought his army to ambush them he found that they were ready and prepared. He was enraged! Believing that one of his trusted servants was a traitor he asked, "Will you tell me which of us is for the king of Israel?!" One of his servants answered saying "No, lord, O king; but Elisha the prophet who is in Israel tells the king of Israel the words that you speak." (Verses 11-12)
Once the king of Aram discovered that Elisha was in the city of Dothan, he sent his army to surround the city during the night. Early that next morning Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, went out of the house and saw the great army. But when he gave Elisha the alarming news Elisha said, - "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them."
Then Elisha prayed that God would open Gehazi’s spiritual eyes that he may see. God answered that prayer and when his servant looked again he saw a mountain full of war horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. They were there before though Gehazi could not see.
On the surface, all of this could be taken as very "nice" sounding stories and inspiring Scriptures that makes us feel pretty special. Though the Scriptures are not written in future tense but present tense, we still automatically receive all of this as mere allegory and referring to the future when all of God’s people will live with Him in Glory. But as we read on we discover something else that just doesn’t quite fit this narrative. The end of
verse 23
says that we have also come
"to the spirits of the righteous made perfect."
Now this no doubt is referring to the great cloud of witnesses who have gone on before us named in Chapter 11. Verse 39 says that they gained their approval through their faith but have not received what was promised in the Covenant of Grace through Faith. Verse 40 says that apart from us, that is, the Church, they would not be made perfect.
So, as we come to the Holy City on Mt. Zion, the angels are there, the Church of the Firstborn assembles there, God and Jesus are there, but only the spirits of the great cloud of witnesses are there. Though there is no thought in the grave as the righteous sleep awaiting their resurrection, the Bible teaches that the spirit of man returns to God when he dies. So, the spirits of the righteous made perfect are held in Heaven until the time of the resurrection when they will rise incorruptible in the glory of the Lord and met Him in the air.
Called Beyond the Veil
We’ve been called to come beyond the veil.
Hebrews 10
talks about entering into the Presence of God through the veil which is the torn flesh of Jesus. Then we receive the exhortation to not forsake the assembling together as some were doing but to stimulate one another to love and good deeds. That’s something we can only do when we are together. So the context of Chapter 12
also includes
Chapter 11
regarding the cloud of witnesses, and Chapter 10
concerning our assembling together for services. This is an important point, because it seems that the reason we have come to assemble at Mt Zion, to the living God and His angels, is to also join with our brethren,
"the general assembly and Church of the Firstborn"
that together
"we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe."
So we must ask the question-can we offer an acceptable service to God at the wrong time or in a casual manner? Remember, the
last two verses of Chapter 12
warns that since our God is a consuming fire, we should come in service to Him with reverence and awe.
Entering through the veil into the Holy Place
"by a new and living way" in Hebrews 10:20
is in the same context as verse 25 "not forsaking our own assembling together." Sabbath observance is not only a day set apart in which we rest from our secular labor, it is also a time when God has commanded a holy convocation, -
"For six days work may be done, but on the Seventh Day there is a Sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation." (Leviticus 23:3)
God has a right, appointed time, a right reverent way, and a right appointed place
A holy convocation is a summons from God to gather before Him at a time set apart for a formal assembly-that is the actual definition. With that in mind, it’s easy to see that there are a lot of Churches out there that are not only ignoring the Sabbath, but are going to great lengths to make their services neither reverent nor formal. Not to suggest that we are to aim to impress God with our dress, but we should wear the best that He has blessed us with.
More to the point, we should not make a conscious effort to make the time of our assembly to be ordinary or common in attitude, atmosphere and dress. Before God met Israel at Sinai He instructed them to consecrate themselves for three days first. Consecrate means to purify yourself, wash your clothes, and wholly dedicate yourself. Not to say a congregation should have a dress code. But we are a holy priesthood of the order of Melchizadek, and even the Levitical priesthood had certain garments they were to wear when they ministered before the Lord. I think it’s reasonable to conclude that each should wear their best just as we should be adorned inwardly with our best.
"For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them."
Israel was summoned to Mt Sinai, a mountain that could be see and touched, though they were commanded to not touch it. They came to a blazing fire, the same fire that was on the burning bush yet did not consume it. The people shrank back at the voice of God. Therefore God could not take pleasure in them, for He says,
"But My righteous one shall live by faith; and if he shrinks back, My Soul has no pleasure in him." (Hebrews 10:38)
For they could not bear the command,
"If even a beast touches the mountain, it will be stoned." And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, "I am full of fear and trembling." But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel. See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking.
For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven. And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying,
"Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven." This expression, "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire." (Hebrews 12:18-29)
His holy ones assemble in the City of the Living God in Heaven. And God is going to shake even Heaven in order that all who can be shaken will be shaken away. Those who are deeply grounded in the Kingdom of God cannot be shaken. As Jesus prophesied in the parable of the Wheat and Tares, the tares which fail to bear fruit for the Lord will be gathered at the Advent and cast into the Lake of Fire.
Judgment Begins With Church
Judgment begins with the Household of God. Peter wrote that if it is with difficulty that the righteous are saved, what will become of sinners? By reading the first three Chapters of Revelation, we understand that the seven Churches of Asia Minor are represented in Heaven as Seven Golden Lampstands. In Chapter one Jesus appears to John in His glory walking among the Lampstands. He is no doubt examining each congregation and making judgments for and against them.
The Churches were located in seven earthly cities on the earth. But they are assembled before Jesus in Heaven as Golden Lampstands. He sees that the congregations in each city had good things that were to be held and strengthened, and some had bad things that they must repent of. Ephesus had lost their first love and were in danger of having the Holy Spirit taken from them. Pergamum had some practicing immorality and receiving false teachings. Sardis had become spiritually dead, and Laodicea had become complacent and lukewarm in their faith. As you read through each letter you see many of the same conditions and practices in the Church today.
Knowing that each Sabbath we are called to a holy convocation to appear before the Lord in Heavenly Places, let us come joyfully in reverence and awe. And let us hear and repent at the words that Jesus delivered to the seven Churches, that we may offer to Him an acceptable service-for our God is a consuming fire.
A Warning Call to Action
By Shane Morris
I struggle to compose a coherent thought, an articulate introduction to the heaviness of this sincere warning I've been led to write to anyone who's willing to hear. Writing this carries with it a certain distress, an uneasiness that I cannot shake. Nonetheless, I am compelled, even in the limited measure that I'm able, to pronounce a call to action — to anyone who stands with me in a base desire for truth.
There has always been a spirit of deceit working over time to infect the church, but today it seems more than ever that it has pervaded the churches throughout this nation. I know not only that I am in a decaying foreign land, but that I live in a land where most of its inhabitants not only lack this same desire, but possess an ultimate disdain for it and set themselves against it vehemently.
I'm only aware of this because I know what it really is that comes from within the heart of every person on this earth, and I only know that, even in the limited way I do, because I know my own heart that I had without Christ -being painfully aware of my need of a new heart.
I am certain that it pains the Lord to see how fond this country has become of the counterfeit — how so happy they have become with the replacement. What do we see when we look around this country today? Today, we can witness with our own eyes the results from years upon years of compromise; the wisdom of God derided and altered into a palatable doctrine that tickles ears and lures warm bodies to fill seats. Or, in the least, it can make a god for you that the world is okay with.
The Lord desires for all of the lost to be saved, but how can He use the church if those inside are themselves lost! If the truth of the gospel of Christ is changed or watered down it no longer frees people. It only gives them a false sense of security, without addressing the root of their sin problem, which is only resolved with repentance.
A house divided cannot stand. The church is to be the pillar and foundation of the truth
(1 Timothy 3:15). Do we think the Lord is pleased with what the mainstream church has become today?
Christians must use the circumstances of these current times as an opportunity to truly do some self-examination. How does the gospel of today line up with the truth? It simply does not. This new religion of Churchianity has turned the gospel into a toy store of self-interest. Have the overly-blessed citizens of this country really come to the conclusion that Christianity is now a one-and-done stop for salvational success? Where is the contrite spirit that looks to God for deliverance each day? What happened to enduring to the end? Where is the repentance now? Who dares now to utter the word 'repent'!?
Have people convinced themselves that they're even a shadow of a passing good thought — outside of Christ? The truth is not fluid. It does not change depending on the audience and it does not evolve because a society has convinced itself they are more advanced than the ones from hundreds of years ago. The truth certainly isn't always pleasant, but if you want it — discomfort is irrelevant.
Imagine this: A Creator God empties Himself of divinity, humbles Himself to the form of a man, suffers His entire life and not only pays the price for a people He has blessed, but becomes their sin, in the chance that they will turn from their sin and simply receive Him ..... only to see them consciously and gladly choose the fake, more desirable, replacement. We will all come to a time when we eventually make the decision of where we stand with God.
A true follower of Christ continues to make that decision every day for the rest of their lives. For one reason. He is Worthy. That is the only reason we must require.
The Lord does not speak to tickle ears. Jesus says everything for a reason. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and only the truth can set you free (John 8:31-36).
It is only the truth that has the power to set free. If we deny the truth, then we deny Him. Partial truths are not really truths. It only takes a little cyanide in a glass of water to kill you. What seems refreshing at first, only leads to destruction. If we really desire the truth, we can agree that there is no worthy replacement. When truth is desired, no counterfeit will do for the seeker.
Jesus said that His followers are to consider the cost
(Luke 14:25-34). Every true Christian has considered this cost and they continue to consider it every single day. We can choose to ignore this reality, but it can only be avoided for a time.
When you look at the filthy table in the low light, it appears to be clean. It's only when you flick the switch and cast the light directly on it that you can see just how unclean it is. Let us hold up and expose this so-called "gospel" of today in the Light of the truth in Christ.
All those who desire the Lord: take the messages that are preached from pulpits across this nation and see how it looks when placed next to the Word of God.
More than likely, it will not hold water, it will not be left standing in the storm, and it will not bear fruit, but only thorns and thistles.
Do not be tricked by the way men may appear, for even the devil himself appeared as an angel of light and so his servants may appear as ministers of righteousness. Ultimately, you will know them by their fruit. (Matthew 7:15-20 / 2 Corinthians 11:13-15)
The time of well-deserved judgment is coming upon this country. Desire the truth and seek the Lord while He may be found. Do not fear but only the Lord Himself. Do not trust in yourself, but put all your trust and hope in Him. Humble yourself beneath the cleansing Blood of Christ and receive His everlasting lovingkindness.
Importance of Truth
Christopher Columbus was considered to be mad, and was rejected and even threatened with being burnt at the stake. All this was because he believed the world wasn't flat, but round. Isn't that amazing? What's really astonishing, is that in 322 BC Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, knew that the world was round. Not only did the Greeks know that the world was spherical in shape, but in 240 BC another Greek, Eratosthenes, accurately calculated the Earth's diameter! So why, more than 1700 years later, did they believe the earth to be flat? If you repeat a lie often enough and for long enough, people begin to believe it's the truth.
Those who claim to be Born Again are not necessarily firmly grounded in the truths of the Bible. In his book which provides a statistical analysis of religious beliefs in America, George Barna cites several fascinating statistics which are based on a national survey.
In chapter four he states, "The Devil, or Satan, is not a living being but is a symbol of evil." Then asking that segment of his survey respondents who have identified themselves at being Born Again, he states, "Do you agree strongly, agree somewhat, disagree somewhat, or disagree strongly with that statement?"
The "Born Again" population replied with 32 percent agreeing strongly, 11 percent agreeing somewhat and 5 percent did not know. Thus, of the total number responding, 48 percent either agreed that Satan is only symbolic or did not know!
Should it then be surprising that later Barna would receive some very startling responses about whether most religions pray to the same god? 60 percent of "Christians" said "yes" at least to some degree!
Heard From God Lately?
By John David Brown
We all have baggage when we come to the Lord. Nobody comes to Jesus whole, but broken. We have all suffered traumas that affect the way we look at and feel about things. Some of them are the result of other people’s choices, some we have inflicted on ourselves.
At the cross, as we repent of our sins, and fully commit our hearts and lives to love, honor, and please our Heavenly Father and Jesus our Savior, we lay the burden of our guilt and shame down. We bury that old sinful self in the watery grave of believer’s baptism, and emerge from the water a new creature in Christ Jesus. Our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. There is no record of sin against us. We are wholly loved, fully accepted, completely clean!
So that’s it, right? Case closed. Just smooth sailin’ all the way to glory! Would that it were so.Alas, no. It’s never long after we are born again, that we come to the very painful realization that the flesh does not die all at once. Our position in the Lord becomes absolutely perfect as soon as, and as long as we abide in Him. Our condition in the flesh, however, requires a long and painful process of struggling and overcoming. In fact, it requires us to crawl up on the cross every day, and put our old sinful nature to death- moment by agonizing moment- for the rest of our natural lives.
Paul talks about this very thing in Romans chapters seven and eight. He expresses deep grief and profound anguish at how his sinful nature in the flesh, the body of death as he calls it, keeps dogging his every step and causing him to fall short of perfectly pleasing the Lord. He wonders what could possibly save him from how persistently vile and selfish his behavior continues to be. He concludes that only Jesus’ sacrifice, that precious blood shed for him on Calvary’s cross, is powerful enough to make him completely clean and perfectly worthy of God’s love and acceptance. Praise God for His breathtaking mercy, love, and amazing grace!
O.K. so if all of this sounds like a theology lecture to you, all wonderfully objective and academic; hold on. It’s about to get real.
So, I just returned from a wonderful, spirit-filled Feast of Tabernacles celebration in beautiful Searcy, Arkansas. The highlight of the eight day-long festival is our Last Great Day evening praise and prayer service. It seems like all of the worship, teaching, and fellowship leading up to that evening prepares a place in our hearts for the Lord to work through the Holy Spirit on that night. We have consistently seen healings and deliverances. It is very powerful.
At the feast 2017, the Lord directed our Pastor to have us hug one another and say, "You are completely clean, and stand blameless in the presence of God." It was God’s message to each of us individually, and not just something nice to say. Although my flesh was a little uncomfortable with all of the "hugginess," I have learned that it is vastly better to do what God says, and not what I am naturally comfortable with. His way is always better. I have often regretted quenching His Spirit, and never once yielding to it.
It was all going very well, and the Lord was saying wonderful things to me through my brethren as well as to them through me. Then, after about an hour, I returned to my seat and stood quietly there waiting for whatever would come next. I hadn’t gotten to everyone, but with so many of us, I never do; and I figured I had blessed and been blessed by the right ones as God was directing the evening.
Then my Pastor came to me where I was standing and I knew that it was time. My flesh was nervous because, what do you pray for your Pastor? What if you say something stupid? I beat my flesh down with faith and walked over to him. As I went to embrace him, I started to put my head on his chest (he’s about six inches taller than me). To my surprise, he took my face in his hands and started to lift my gaze towards him. Also to my surprise, I resisted, trying to point my head back down. This happened three times. Finally, I realized as my heart trembled and I became aware that I was harboring guilt and shame of which I had been completely unaware, and allowed the Lord through my Pastor to tell me that I was clean and that He loved me. I was undone.
Here’s the thing, no matter where we are in our Christian walk, we all still have a little brokenness to heal, a little trash to take out, a little more nourishment of truth to take in. I grant you that the more extreme your personal history is, the more profound your need probably is. But, to be fair, if we are measuring the distance between where any one of us is at the moment, and the fullness of the stature of Christ, the difference between each of us is negligible by comparison.
Now I happen to have known about my need to believe God’s love for me, especially in light of events in my early years. Moreover, I have made consistent, earnest efforts to address any lies of the devil (you are not loved, you are not worthy, etc.) by actively rehearsing the truth of what God says about me in His word (you are a new creature, there is no condemnation, I love you so much that I gave my son for you, etc.).
Even so, no effort on our parts, Herculean as they may be, will remove our need for a "right now" word from the Lord spoken in the power of the Holy Spirit. He can do more in a divine moment, than we can achieve in a natural lifetime of work. Isn’t that wonderful?!
Our need to hear God’s voice, and feel His touch will never diminish. As His children, we do not outgrow our need for Him by perfecting ourselves. If anything, the more we mature in Him, the more acutely we realize our need for His presence.
So, I just wanted to share this experience with all of you as a testimony to God’s goodness, and the power of His Spirit working in our lives-and the incalculable value of yielding to it. I pray that you are encouraged by it. May you be blessed and may the Lord receive the glory!

Killing My Dog
was the Best Thing I’ve Ever Done
By Mattie C. Lasiter
I was young. Inexperienced. Immature. In a world filled with responsibilities and pressures, I was wholly unprepared for the burden that had been laid upon my shoulders. And just when I thought my very last shred of hope had evaporated along with my aspirations, I realized something. I could make my tomorrow brighter. I could put down my dog.
First, I'd like to clarify that she wasn't ill. She wasn't injured. But I knew in my heart that removing the weight of her dependence on me would open up a whole new world of possibilities. I got Luna during a difficult time in my life. Always a reminder of that time, she had become somewhat of an emotional burden to me that I found nearly impossible to bear at times. And on the 23rd day of January, 2017, I changed my life forever. As she faded a new me was rising.
Dog food, flea medications, vet visits, grooming fees. All of it. Gone. I suddenly felt lighter. Free. And I was able to breathe easier knowing that she wouldn't have to live a life of want. I suppose I'm not the only one who found new freedom. I gave her that gift as well.
Studies have shown that people who remove from the their lives the stress that a pet often is, are much more likely to report aspirational plans for the next year. And I've been no exception. I don't worry about her when I go out of town. No more subjecting her to unpleasant baths. Just my dreams for the future. Unfettered and forward-facing.
I can honestly say it has been the best decision I've ever made. Pursuing my passion, my art....it has changed me. And none of it would have been possible without this decision. No more memories of a dark past. Just the chance to take a step forward.
Now I can surge ahead with my goals and dreams front and center. And maybe in the future, I'll choose to have a dog. But it will be my choice. And at the time of my choosing. The right time.
I hope that all of you can see the value and bravery of my actions and take it to heart. Don't live with the burden. And don't live with the shame and guilt that society tries to push onto us when we make the right decision for ourselves. It's your life and only you answer for it.
Putting Luna down gave me the freedom to leave my toxic relationships behind and refocus on finishing college, graduating, and now having a career in which I advocate for the very rights that allowed me to change paths. Every day, I am thankful for putting her down. * A sad & satirical response to abortion argument
Sorrow Without Regret
By Larry R. Lasiter
"For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death." 2 Corinthians 7:10
Those who choose to continue in sin will eventually become hardened. The parable of the fig tree in Luke 13
is my favorite Scripture to use when explaining that God is patient but He does not wait forever. Once God sees that a person is not going to obey Him and bear righteous fruit, He takes the Holy Spirit and then sends upon them a "spirit of delusion: that he may actually believe the lie he has chosen to receive. In
Romans 1
we see the same thing - God gave the rebellious over to a depraved mind to practice the evil desires of their heart. See Hebrews 6
and 10 also. Paul warned that the fallen may experience a sorrow that cannot lead them to repentance.
Jude wrote of those who were "twice dead" or "doubly dead" - these are those who were once children of God but who later returned to the fallen world. This is a frightening truth and has always sobered me and caused me to examine the motivations of my heart.
Being a Pastor, I have seen this happen to people. When a person crosses over from the divine nature to the fallen nature he no longer loves God and the truth nor the ways of God. His heart has become apostate, craving the things of the world.
This, however does not prevent his conscience from rising up in protest from time to time. He may experience sorrow and temporary guilt in his conscience which may move him to rise up against his fallen heart and temporarily suppress it’s desires - but eventually the heart prevails, because -
"Out of the mouth the heart speaks"
and
"As a man thinks, so he is."
The heart is the real you, which is why God declares, -"My people always go astray in their heart"
and why the spiritually weakened David cried, -"Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit in me, O’ God!"
Until a complete hardening takes place when the conscience gives up to the fallen heart, the person will experience inner turmoil and highs and lows. Because of a guilt-driven conscience he will be bothered by knowing that he is living a less than committed life. He may live a carnal life all week yet be momentarily pierced when he hears the Word of God read or spoken during a church service. This is why so many of the same people fall before the same altar week after week but obviously have no power to walk in Christ without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit operating unquenched.
People rarely have an accurate understanding of the motives of their own heart - most people are unaware that they have malevolence always lying just beneath the surface. And it’s sitting there waiting patiently for someone or something to unleash it. The Bible says that when asked, every man will declare his own righteousness. I think it’s safe to assume that if you asked people randomly on the street if they consider themselves a "good person" most would quickly say "yes."
However, we live in a very dark world. Who among us does not lock their doors each night? Can you find a person who has not been a victim of some type of crime even if only theft? There are a great many people who would commit various crimes against their neighbor if they knew they wouldn’t get caught.
"I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us." 2 Cor. 7:9
Sorrow is not enough, only repentance will do.
The Great Controversy
By Larry R. Lasiter
"And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the Lake of Fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false Prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." Revelation 20:10
I was watching the History Channel one night when a two-hour program entitled "God vs Satan" came on the air. I didn’t plan to stay tuned and certainly didn’t expect much out of the program. I have been constantly amazed by how inaccurate this network has been when programming Bible or Christian topics. It didn’t take long for problems to show up this time either. The documentary depicted a great controversy between God and Satan for the souls of men. Satan is often thought of as the ruler of Hell who is trying to gather as many souls as he can that they may serve him for all eternity. Among the Gothic crowd you often hear, -"I would rather rule in Hell with Satan than to serve God in Heaven!"
However, this whole concept is a lie. Satan does not rule Hell, God created Hell to destroy him and his demons, - "Depart from Me accused ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels." (Matt.25) Revelation 14
says that those in Hell will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of Jesus, the Lamb of God.
The returning Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords who will establish His rule over all, including Hell. There will be torment in Hell but eventually all who are cast into Hell will die - the Lake of Fire is called the "second death." The expression "everlasting fire" taken from Gk "aeon" can mean lasting an "age" in Greek, which is a thousand years. One thing is certain, there will be no instantaneous death in Hell. The damned will weep, gnash their teeth, be denied rest, and suffer torment.
Ezekiel 28
says that even Satan will eventually be burned to ashes, -"Therefore I have brought fire from the midst of you; It has consumed you, and I have turned you to ashes on the earth."
There is a great struggle between the forces of Light and the forces of Darkness, but the battle is raging in the hearts of men, not in a personal war between God and Satan.
It is our fight and our choice. We can choose the Light or the Darkness, but let us never be deceived - just a tiny light overpowers the darkness. Satan is a defeated foe and it took no more than Michael, another angel to defeat him and cast him down to the earth. And when Jesus sentences him to the abyss it will take only a single angel to carry out the mission, - "Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the abyss." (Rev.20)
Though the devil is acting as the "god of this world" he is not the Creator God. Lucifer is a created angel who rebelled, nothing more. And though the whole world presently lies in his hand, he can only operate within the boundaries in which God allows.
"We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He (Jesus) who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him." (1
John 5:18)
Jesus has already come to destroy the works of the devil and all we need do is submit to God and resist him and he will run from us. In Christ, we have armor which cannot be penetrated and divinely powerful weapons which are able to destroy the devil’s fortresses. Let us march courageously forward for no weapon formed against us can prosper and he has nowhere safe to hide.
What and Who am I About?
By Mattie C. Lasiter
I read a quote this week that said "If someone can’t be about you, they don’t care about you". My first reaction was to mutter "Well, that’s awfully demanding of you…" with raised eyebrows. And then I quickly realized that nothing could be more accurate.
This subject is one that has followed me around for what seems like months now. It’s cropped up in sermons, articles I’ve read and even a few seemingly unrelated youtube videos recently. "What and who am I about?" can be an intimidating question, especially when you know the answer isn’t what it should be. And I, to my shame, have found myself to be very wanting in regards to this question.
I believe that while incredibly useful in other areas of our lives, our abilities and talents are God-given to us for one purpose. And the purpose is to fulfill the role that we were created for. I remember causing a few laughs once when I used a metal pipe to hammer a wood screw into a wall so that I could hang a clock up (I didn’t have anything else. Cut me some slack, man). It was so laughable because there are tools specifically made for exactly what I was doing, but I wasn’t using them. It worked (sorta), but the pipe made a poor hammer the the screw a poor nail. The pipe was perfectly suited to be a pipe. And the screw was an exemplary screw, if you ask me. But in that moment, neither were fulfilling the role for which they were created.
Now, I know that’s a strange way to make this point, but doesn’t the same principle apply to us and our personal ministries? I know that I neglect the work that I was created to do for a variety of reasons. I’m too busy. I’m too tired. Or my all-time favorite "I’m not good enough". You know, it occurred to me that a hammer doesn’t worry about hammering. The hand that wields the hammer is the one who does the hammering. The hammer is what it is and it’s going to be the best at what it does because it was made to do exactly that. Why do we think we’re different?
I’m primarily preaching to myself. But I think it can apply to everyone. We each have a function to perform in the body. And being ready and willing is enough. Let’s not be more ambitious for "our" work than we are for His."

"Christianity" is the Enemy
By Mattie C. Lasiter
You know, that title might be just a bit misleading. What I really mean is this; mainstream Christianity is the enemy. Still not with me? Let's break it down.
The early Church was heavily persecuted (and still is around the world) and I promise you that it wasn't for their youth outreach paintball matches, passion play productions or vacation Bible schools. The Church in America, is lacking in the persecution department for a simple and salient reason. No standard is being held up.
The most comfortable medical treatment facility in the world isn't of much use if your injury or illness isn't addressed. Sure, you'll be nice and comfy. And you'll also go untreated and probably die. So, there's that...
I view the "Church" in a similar light. There's a fixation on comfort to the extent that the aforementioned standard is left to the side. And not only that, they find themselves opposing those who would hold that standard up. I've heard "We couldn't possibly teach that. People would leave!". You'll notice that something is missing from that sentence; any mention of the truth. We want our lukewarm bath. Not too cold, not too hot. "Ahhh, just right." We have beautiful buildings, comfortable pews, services that last an hour, and watered down "sermons" all in the name of comfort. In our quest to bring people in and keep them in, we've left their fatal "illness" unaddressed. In providing a false sense of security, we damn them to certain death.
If I saw a house on fire and had the opportunity to alert those inside to the danger, I would likely not spend much time worrying about startling them. Their lives are in danger. How much more the unsaved in this world?
Living outside of God's will is destructive. And creating an atmosphere that lacks a standard (ie; alerting people inside a burning house will mean their death) is even worse. And that is exactly what "mainstream" Christianity and it's leaders have done. They've created a perfectly acceptable and comfortable place. The only problem is that God wasn't invited.
"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth." - Rev. 3:15-16
A Defendable Faith
John David Brown
Everyone believes in something. Whether we are a skeptic, a naturalist, an atheist, an agnostic, or an Evangelical Christian, we are basing our worldview on what we believe is true. That is the definition of faith; it is a belief, trust, or confidence in something. So the question that we all must face is not do we have faith, we all do, but is our belief true? Do we have a defendable faith?
Subjective or Objective Truth
Some people say that all beliefs are equally valid; you have your truth, I have mine, and that’s O.K. This statement, and beliefs based on it, are incoherent and demonstrably self-contradictory. It makes the assertion that there is no objective truth, but expects us believe that it is itself objectively true.
Any truth-claim, and thus belief, can be tested in two important ways to determine its veracity. Is it coherent? And does it correlate accurately to the available evidence? If the answer to either of these questions is no, then our faith may be quite sincere, but it is sincerely wrong. We have confidence in something false. An indefensible faith. Alternatively, if our beliefs are coherent and consistent with available evidence, we have confidence in something true. We then have a defendable faith.
The Faith of Atheism
It has become popular in some academic and scientific circles to hold the belief that God does not exist. Those who do often claim that the essence of Theism is belief in God’s existence in spite of the evidence. They also claim that their position, by contrast, is based on evidence and therefore is not faith. Each of these claims is false.
While belief in the existence of God, as all beliefs by definition are, is faith, it is not blind faith. The scientific evidence available for our examination points clearly and inescapably to God.
Scientific evidence has now clearly demonstrated that the universe, that is space-time and mass-energy, came in to being in a blinding moment about 14 billion years ago. In order for that to happen, no fewer than 30 cosmological constants, such as gravity, the rate of expansion, and the strong and weak nuclear forces, had to be exquisitely fine-tuned to produce the life-permitting universe that we observe today.
Please note that the Bible has always stated that the universe was created, that is to say brought into being, whereas scientists from the time of Aristotle have claimed that it just always existed and have only recently caught up with the Bible, admitting that it came into being.
What science demonstrates is that everything that comes into being, has a cause. Things don’t just pop into existence from nothing for no reason. So, since the universe came into being, it must have a cause. But what are the necessary attributes of a cause sufficient to produce an effect such as the cosmos?
It must be personal. If the cause of the universe existed without the effect, and then brought the effect into existence a finite time ago, then it must be able to choose whether or not to produce the effect; otherwise the effect and the cause would always exist simultaneously. That means that, like a person, the cause of the universe must have the power to choose.
It must be eternal. Science tells us that time is a function of matter. That means that the cause of the universe must necessarily exist independently of time.
It must be immaterial. The universe is comprised of matter, and as we have already seen, came into being. The cause of the universe therefore, in order to produce all matter, must be immaterial.
It must be intelligent. The fine tuning of the initial constants necessary to produce our universe is so staggeringly precise, if any one of them were different by only a hair’s breadth, it could not exist. The probability of their simultaneously occurring by chance rather than intelligent design is effectively nihil.
If, for example, the force of gravity were slightly weaker, elements like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen would not exist. If it were slightly stronger, the stars would burn out in about a year. As it is, the chemistry required to permit life is just right and stars burn for an average of 80 billion years.
The mathematic probability of this constant alone being set precisely where it is, is one in 14 billion, billion, billion. Add to that the many other constants, such as the expansion rate, the strong nuclear force, the weak nuclear force, and many others which are equally fine-tuned, and the likelihood that the universe came to exist without intelligent design falls to one in 10 to the 50th, or statistically zero.
It must be immensely powerful. Consider the amount of energy in just a single atom as evidenced in the atomic bomb and we begin to understand the vast power packed in to that tiny bit of the cosmos. Scientists estimate the number of atoms in the universe at 4 times 10 to the 80th power. So how powerful must the cause of all of that be? Truly, it beggars the imagination.
So, based on the available scientific evidence, the universe was overwhelmingly likely to have been caused by a personal, extremely intelligent, unimaginably powerful, timeless, immaterial being. Of course that is exactly what the Bible says, and what Christians mean when they talk about God.
To hold the belief that the universe came from nowhere for no reason in spite of the overwhelming evidence of such a designer is, on examination, not just faith, but blind faith.
In the end, atheism, is a belief held in spite of the available evidence, whereas belief in God is strongly supported by evidence. The New Atheists such as Dawkins and Harris are quick ask -"if there is a Creator then who created the Creator?" But they argue that the universe created everything-so then, who created the universe-their "creator?"
There are numerous other discoveries of science that atheists must ignore to maintain their faith. Among them the irreducible complexity of living cells, the exquisite quaternary life-code contained in the approximately three billion letters of the human genome, the rational intelligibility of the universe, and the universal apprehension of moral duties.
The Bible teaches that the whole of creation reveals God’s existence, His nature, and His glory. If we are to maintain our denial of Him in spite of literally a whole universe of evidence, we should at least be honest and quit calling it science. Wishful thinking, perhaps. Blind faith, certainly. But science, not even close.
Case for God from Motion
Thomas Aquinas had Five Proofs for the Existence of God. Let us consider his First argument, the Argument from Motion. Of the things we observe, all things have been placed in motion. No thing has placed itself in motion. By "motion" Aquinas means any potential change. Such as water has the potential to be cold, warm, hot, ice or even steam. Something causes each.
Working from the assumption that if a thing is in motion then it has a cause to be. Aquinas notes that an infinite chain of things in motion and things causing things to be in motion cannot be correct. For if an infinite chain or regression existed among things in motion and things causing motion then we could not account for the motion we observe.
If we move backwards from the things we observe in motion to their cause, and then to that cause of motion within those things that caused motion, and so on, then we could continuing moving backwards ad infinitum. It would be like trying to count all of the points in a line segment, moving from point B to point A. We would never get to point A. Yet point A must exist as we know there is a line segment. Similarly, if the cause-and-effect chain did not have a starting point then we could not account for the motion we observe around us. Since there is motion, the cause and effect chain (accounting for motion) must have had a starting point. We now have a second point:
The cause and effect relationship among things-being-moved and things-moving must have a starting point. At one point in time, the relationship was set in motion. Thus, there must be a First Cause which set all other things in motion.
What else can we know about the First Cause? The first cause must have been uncaused. If it were caused by another thing, then we have not resolved the problem of the infinite regression. So, in order to account for the motion that we observe, it is necessary to posit a beginning to the cause and effect relationship underlying the observed motion. It is also necessary to claim that the First Cause has not been caused by some other thing. It is not set in motion by another entity.
The First Cause is also the Unmoved Mover. The Unmoved Mover is that being whom set all other entities in motion and is the cause of all other beings-GOD.
Divine Blindness
By Larry R. Lasiter
When we take a look around the world we see many problems. There are wars, localized conflicts and just a general inability for differing groups of people to live peacefully together. We see sharp and heated disagreements in ideology even among those in the same culture or of the same religion. People are often passionate about their ideology and everybody seems to be at work setting "right" the "wrongs" according to their worldview. Seems everybody believes in the concept of right and wrong, good and evil, they just can’t find common ground on what they are.
It is common to hear people say that truth is relative, and that "your" truth is not necessarily someone else’s truth. Though this sounds intellectual, it is absurd. To make the claim that truth is relative is an absolute statement in itself. If truth were relative no absolute statement could be made about it. The laws of science are based upon the certainty of the truth of how they operate. Even Einstein’s Theory of Relativity is built upon the stability of absolute truths.
There is an absolute truth of what is right and what is wrong. The same truth is truth regardless of time, culture, or whatever seems to be considered politically correct. According to the Holy Bible, the truth is more than a mere concept but is the very person of Jesus Christ. Jesus said,
"I Am the Truth." (John 14:6)
Jesus is the Word of God personified. The fullness of truth can only be found in the teachings of God and the Truth He sent into the world in His Son,
"For this have I been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." (John 18:37)
Notice that there are those who are "of the truth" which can only mean that there are others who are "of the lies and deception." Where do you fit in?
Very few have searched for the truth and fewer still received it when they found it. When the Truth came in bodily form the religious folks of His day crucified Him. Jesus didn’t fit what they were looking for in a Messiah. They certainly didn’t expect their Messiah say to them,
"You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me." (John 8:44-45)
According to Jesus, these great Jewish Religious leaders had rejected the truth and had received lies. John 1 says that Jesus came to His own (countrymen) and His own received Him not.
People, in general, search for what they already want to find. This is why the Holy Scriptures have been twisted by false teachers for millennia. The lie has always been preferred,
Romans chapter 1
says that since the creation people knew God and His truth but suppressed it in unrighteousness.
Verse 25
says,
"For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator."
If you want to know what "creature" has been worshiped more than any other, just take a look in the mirror. Most seek a "truth" that serves their own desires.
So, what does God do when people reject the truth to hold onto lies? He sends upon them a divine blindness so that they cannot see the truth. A blindness to cause them to believe the lies they wish were true, notice,
"And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind to do those things which are not proper." (Romans 1:28) Verse 24
puts it this way,
"Therefore, God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity."
For those who will not receive a love for the truth, 2 Thessalonians, 2:11-12, says, "For this reason God will send upon them strong delusion so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness."
Notice also, Isaiah 44:18, "They do not know, nor do they understand, for He has smeared over their eyes so that they cannot see and their hearts so that they cannot comprehend."
All these Holy Scriptures are referring to those who have rejected the truth or who place no value in it. Those who reject the truth will be rejected by God.
Jesus said, "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and Truth." (John 4:23-24)
Are you one of those who worship the Father in Spirit and Truth? The people of Israel during Jesus’ time believed that their religious leaders were righteous and taught the truth, but Jesus exposed them and their false teachings. Much of what they cherished most was their ancestral traditions. Jesus asked them,
"Why do you yourselves transgress the Commandment of God for the sake of your tradition" (Matthew 15:3)
He then quotes
Isaiah saying,
"But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men." (Verse 9)
Worship without truth is vain.
More than 40 years ago my concept of truth was challenged and I was compelled to examine what I had believed to be biblical and true. I was confident that I had been right because my beliefs were in line with mainstream Christianity and it’s notable ministers. However, I found that I was wrong on many things and that mainstream Christianity had fallen into errors just as the religious leaders of Jesus’ day.
So, there I stood in the valley of decision. If I accepted the truth I knew that there would be problems with family, friends and at work, but how could I reject the truth knowing that it was Jesus? I laid down my will and submitted to God’s will and have never regretted that decision.
This is merely an article and is not written to be a comprehensive study (Though there are plenty at our web site) so my purpose is to simply awaken your conscience to truth as mine was long ago. So I want to leave you with some questions with the hope that you will seek true answers honestly.
1. Is it true worship to set aside Sunday, the first day, for weekly assembly since God set aside Saturday, the seventh day as the time for rest and holy convocation? What authority is there for a transference from Sabbath to Sunday?
2. Was Jesus really crucified on Friday and resurrected on Sunday morning? The sign Jesus gave that He was Messiah was the sign of Jonah - three days and three nights. Since Friday evening to Sunday morning is only 1 and ½ days how can this be true? Wasn’t the tomb already empty while it was yet dark on Sunday morning?
3. What is the state of the dead? What happens when a person dies? Is the soul immortal?
4. Why doesn’t the Church observe the annual Holy Day Festivals of the Bible since we find in Zechariah 14 that the whole world will observe them during Jesus’ reign? Jesus didn’t do away with the Passover but simply gave it a Christian meaning and changed the way it is observed.
5. Is it really true worship to observe holidays which predate Christianity and which use pagan customs in it’s celebration?
6. God reveals His Divinely Appointed Times for Holy Convocations in Leviticus 23. They begin with the Sabbath day which is followed by seven annual Festivals. Doesn’t it seem that these have been replaced by Sunday and our annual holidays?
7. Did Jesus change the food laws that were written in the Old Testament? If these laws were only for Israel then why did God command Noah to take seven pairs of clean animals while only one pair of unclean animals? Noah must have known what animals were clean to eat and which were not. Was Peter’s vision in Acts 11 really about food or God’s acceptance of Gentiles?
8. Certainly we are saved by grace through our faith in Christ. But does that mean we are not obligated to obey God’s Commandments? What does the New Testament teach regarding keeping the Commandments?
"Truth crushed to the earth is truth still, and like a seed will rise again." Jefferson Davis
Truth is Part of God’s Nature
George Washington Carver became one of the most honored and respected scientists of his generation by focusing on the very simple peanut. Eventually he would discover some three hundred uses for this most basic and seemingly insignificant common food. Carver attributed all of his scientific discoveries to God.
He once said that he had asked God to explain the universe to him, but that he felt God saying that was too large a task. When he asked for something he could handle, Carver said that God directed his attention to the peanut. His focus and search for value produced amazing results. Carver never doubted that God was rewarding his faith and effort, and he said, "Without God to draw aside the curtain I would be helpless."
In a day when many people deny that truth even exists as an absolute reality, those of us who know God need to be more focused than ever on seeking for it. Truth is not an abstract concept that varies with time and place and can never be fully known. Truth is part of the very nature of God.
Standing on Truth
Winston Churchill said, "Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened." That may be a common response to truth, but it places those who respond thusly on the road to tragedy and destruction. There is no way to love and follow God without loving and following truth. The two cannot be separated.
Twisting the Truth
Once the devil was walking along with one of his cohorts. They saw a man ahead of them pick up something shiny. "What did he find?" asked the cohort.
"A piece of the truth," the devil replied. "Doesn’t it bother you that he found a piece of the truth?" asked the cohort.
"No," said the devil, "I will see to it that he makes a religion out of it."
Truth taken out of context and twisted is the basis for many false religions.
Reaching Beyond Self
By Larry R. Lasiter
In Christ Jesus we can reach beyond self, that is, beyond who we are in the natural. The Apostle Paul discovered that he could do all things through Christ who strengthened him. (Phil. 4:13)
He said that he had learned the secret of how to be content in all things. He suffered persecution, imprisonment, beatings, hunger, exposure and betrayal, yet found that he could be content. Even while waiting on death row he was content and looking upward to his eternal reward.
The secret to his success was simply being thankful. He understood that there was a great cost to being a follower of Jesus.
(Luke 14:25-35)
When the Lord called him to be a disciple He told him that he would suffer much. But Paul accepted this with joy, knowing that it would earn for him an eternal weight of glory in the future. (2 Cor. 4:17)
This attitude of gratefulness anchored this beloved Apostle in the present as well as motivating him to press toward his future reward.
A while back I became so sick, violently ill suffering from Meneire’s syndrom. Sudden attacks of severe vertigo followed by uncontrolled vomiting. I would be confined to my bed, unable to move for as long as 35 hours. The attacks seemed to be unbearable, and during one especially violent episode I began to cry out to God to help me. It was a desperate cry. Suddenly, in my mind I could see a cotton field. As I continued looking I saw slaves working in the pressing heat as their master’s hired hands watched over them. Then my eyes were brought to a young boy who was nauseous and dizzy and was vomiting continually, but he dared not stop working.
I thought to myself, "horrific things such as this must have occurred many times throughout history." I then began to consider my situation in a new and different light. Yes, I was very sick and it was terribly uncomfortable. But I was in a comfortable bed, in a temperature controlled room, with a family to care for me. Then something amazing happened-I became filled with gratitude for my many blessings, and my cry went from "Lord, please! why ?! to "Thank You Lord!" And then I realized, that though I was very sick, I had become content in my suffering. My condition hadn’t changed, but the way I looked at it had-and that had made all the difference.
How we feel and how we think creates our state of being. We often think and even react the way we do from habit. We have actually trained our brain to react in a certain way to certain stimuli or circumstances.
A habit is a set of automatic, unconscious thoughts, emotions and behaviors that’s acquired through repetition. A habit is something we have done so many times that our body knows how to do it better than our conscious mind. It works much like muscle memory.
For example, we perform many tasks by muscle memory without having to think much about it. Tying our shoes, brushing our teeth, driving a car or riding a bicycle are among those things. I’m a pianist and I have learned that if I begin thinking about playing a piece of music I have memorized, I run into trouble-I usually cannot "remember" with my brain or my mind what notes and chord progressions to play. But when I clear my mind and allow my muscle memory to take over then I can play the piece flawlessly.
In cases such as these we want our "muscle memory" to take over for us. But, what if we’ve allowed our "muscle memory" to automatically cause us to act or react in ways that are harmful to us and others? In these situations we need to learn to stop and take control and essentially teach and train our brain to act and react positively. It’s not easy, but we can take control of how we act and react. We can choose to be positive minded and give thanks in faith. If you are a born again Christian you are a child of the present and the future, but not of the past. We all must ask ourselves and honestly answer the question -"Do I believe my thoughts have something to do with my destiny?"
Oftentimes people have become addicted to their painful experiences. Some do not want to let go of a negative past because the experience involves someone they do not want to forgive. In holding onto the pain as a "victim" they feel that they have "incarcerated" the one who "caused" the pain, and if they choose to stop thinking about it the "bad person" would be released. Sadly, we can come to need "enemies" to reaffirm our addiction to bitterness and hatred.
But there is a terrible cost. The eternal cost is what we must consider more earnestly because Jesus said that only those who forgive others can receive forgiveness from God.
(Matthew 6:15)
But there is also a hefty price that it costs us in the here and now. This type of stress is known to harm the health of our bodies by releasing dangerous chemicals. When we dwell on painful memories our system is flooded with chemicals that causes a variety of illnesses.
Notice this from the famous Mayo Clinic: "Your body is hard-wired to react to stress in ways meant to protect you against threats from predators and other aggressors. Such threats are rare today, but that doesn’t mean that life is free of stress. On the contrary, you undoubtedly face multiple demands each day, such as shouldering a huge workload, making ends meet and taking care of your family. Your body treats these so-called minor hassles as threats. As a result you may feel as if you’re constantly under assault. But you can fight back. You don’t have to let stress control your life." If we do not have a positive vision of the future we are left only with the painful experiences of the past.
The brain is a record of the past, so we wake up everyday with thoughts of the past and sometimes anxiousness about the future. We tend to anticipate the future from a record of past failures, pain and fear. And each of our memories have emotions attached to them. When we dwell on a painful experience it puts us in a mood. We may feel sad or even anguish because the old emotions attached to the memory come flooding into our mind. It we continue to allow this to take root it becomes a temperament. It’s now no longer a momentary mood but a lingering temperament and affects how we view and treat others. If we allow this to continue unchecked it will ultimately become our personality trait. Now it’s no longer a momentary mood or lingering temperament, but who we have allowed ourselves to become.
With this temperament we become guarded, always expecting the worse case scenario and because it helps us feel justified we eventually embrace it. Some may ask, "Why are you this way? In which you may reply, "I am this way because of something that happened twenty years ago! Or ten years ago! Or five years ago! Or one year ago! Or last week!" How long ago really doesn’t matter as long as it’s something we had become so emotionally attached to we would rather say "You would be like this too if what happened to me had happened to you!", than to let it go.
But God has given us an example to follow. He not merely forgives us of our sins, not only pays our sin debt, but actually removes them from His memory. In the Christian Covenant of Grace through Faith, God remembers our sins no more. And that’s an example that we must follow if we really want to live in freedom.
Most people live as victims of past experiences and circumstances. In the truest sense we surrender our free will to the dictate of our unconscious emotional reactions. All of us need to sincerely ask ourselves the questions - "Does my thinking create my environment - Or does my environment create my thinking.?"
Because our brains do not know the difference between the emotions of a past experience and something presently happening, the emotions are the same. And sadly, too many of us relive the painful emotions of the past on a regular basis. Each time our brain will react as if it is a new negative experience, and will flood our system with harmful chemicals. Clearly, if our negative thoughts have the power to make us sick, then our positive thoughts have the power to help us heal and help keep us healthy.
We are creatures of habit. Our unconscious mind becomes a hardwired program operating from past experiences. And by practice we’ve taught it to routinely respond. What we must do is to take control of our thoughts and turn our hardwired unconscious mind into a software program for a hopeful future. We must have hope. The Bible says that hope is what anchors our soul.
To accomplish this seemingly impossible task will take a conscious effort each morning and throughout the day. When we rise from sleep let us go to prayer with positive thoughts. And when an old painful experience from the past comes to mind-cast it out. The Apostle Paul wrote,
"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are TAKING EVERY THOUGHT CAPTIVE to the obedience of Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)
Notice that Paul is speaking to the saints as active warriors in the Army of God, and that as such, we must destroy "speculations." That’s usually where it all begins. We fail to capture a speculation and it grows in power until we have convinced ourselves that it is terribly true and maliciously directed against us. We can and must change the way we think, understanding that nothing we will ever experience is too great that God cannot turn it into good for us. We must live by faith in all things.
There is a very applicatory story in
Acts 16. Paul and Silas entered into the city of Philippi to preach the Gospel. As they walked along they found themselves being followed by a slave-girl who was possessed by a spirit of divination. She was very valuable to her masters because she brought them much wealth through her fortune telling. As she was following Paul and Silas she was crying aloud proclaiming "These men are servants of the Most High God!" She must have been speaking with sarcasm because it annoyed Paul who turned and cast the spirit out. When her masters discovered that she no longer had the power to foretell the future they had Paul and Silas arrested, beaten and imprisoned in the maximum security of the jail.
Obviously, this was a painful experience. To be beaten with rods is painful indeed, not to mention being chained in the most secure part of the jail. I often picture them as hanging in chains against a stone wall scarred and bloody. But Paul and Silas felt honored to share in the sufferings of Christ. And around midnight they became so filled with joy they began to sing praises to God loudly! Then suddenly God caused a great earthquake which shook the foundation of the prison causing every cell door to open and every chain to fall from every prisoner. Every prisoner bolted out of their cell and began to run. But they didn’t run out of the jail-they ran farther in to where Paul and Silas were! Because of Paul and Silas’ great demonstration of faith the other prisoners were drawn to them. When the Jailer came in and saw all the doors opened and all the chains on the floor, he drew his sword to kill himself. But Paul cried out "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.!" That very night that man’s whole family was saved-and the Church of God was established in the city of Philippi. Paul and Silas were released the next day.
Jesus once healed a man who was born blind. The disciples asked Jesus why this man had never had sight-was it because of his sins or his parents sins? But Jesus said neither, but that it was for God’s glory-then He healed the man from his blindness. This man had endured this blindness his whole life. He had never seen a beautiful flower or a stunning sunset. Nor had he ever seen his mother’s face. And for what reason? For the glory of God.
We may never understand why we experience the unpleasantries that come with living in a fallen world. But if we choose to live in faith and love our God, He is faithful to turn whatever the enemy means for harm into good. We should always learn from the past but live in the present with a view to a hopeful future. Jesus taught His disciples to rejoice when they were persecuted because their reward in Heaven would be great. James taught that we should count it all joy when we fall into various trials. But that’s not how we’ve taught ourselves to react is it? We naturally react in sadness and fear. But we can change that in the same way that Paul and Silas did. They did not allow a negative environment to create their state of being-but directed their thinking in faith to create a positive state of being in a negative environment.
The Bible says many wonderful things about the children of God. That we have been forgiven and that our sins have been removed even from God’s memory -"I will remember your sins no more."
We read that as born again saints we are "holy", "unblemished", "pure", "made perfect", etc. Peter reveals that we are a holy priesthood and living stones of God’s Spiritual House-and that we have become partakers of His Divine Nature. The Bible teaches us that we are "more than conquerors in Christ," and that "no weapon fashioned against us can prosper." And that since we have been born again of the Spirit the old things have passed away and all things have become new. If you will commit to forgive those who have hurt you, God will give you the power to forget also. The former things will soon rarely ever come to your mind. And if and when they do, there will be no pain associated them.
You dear brother, you dear sister, do not have to live shackled to the past as a slave of a negative unconscious mind endlessly reliving the painful experiences of the past. Begin each day in hopeful prayer with thoughts of a positive future. Capture the negative thoughts that seek to enslave and have dominion over you. If you will do this long enough you will successfully retrain your brain to the point that it will react positively unconsciously as muscle memory does. You thoughts have the power to make you feel bad or feel good. In Christ, we have the power think greater than how we feel. Won’t you reach beyond self? God has given you this power.
Redeemed from the Curse
By Larry R. Lasiter
"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us - for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’ - in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith." Galatians 3:13-14
The Apostle Paul had firmly established the Churches in Galatia on faith in Jesus Christ for their righteousness and salvation. Later in this chapter he explains that Christians, whether Jew or Gentile, have entered into Abraham’s Covenant of Promise by the blood of Christ which ratified it.
Judaizing Christians had come from Jerusalem and were troubling the Galatians by insisting that they must be circumcised and directed to keep the whole Law of Moses. In essence, they were moving the new converts from the blessing of Abraham’s Covenant to the bondage of the Sinai Covenant.
Jesus said to a group of Jews who had believed and were following Him
"If you abide in My Word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31-32)
Unfortunately, this offended these men who made the claim that they had never been slaves to anyone. Jesus then explained that anyone who has committed sin is a slave to sin and is in need of being set free. They countered with the claim that they were Abraham’s descendants and were heirs of the Promise. They were making the argument that the Covenant ratified at Sinai with the blood of animals was enough. But they were very wrong, for Hebrews 9 says that it is impossible for the blood of animals to atone for sins. The sacrifices were to be a constant reminder of sin and their need of the sacrifice of the Lamb of God. Only the blood of the sinless Lamb of God has the power to wash away sin.
Nicodemus, who came to Jesus at night likewise believed that he was a rightful heir of the Promises made to Abraham because he was a Jew. He wanted to know if Jesus was the Messiah. Jesus answered by saying, "Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the Kingdom of God." (John 3:3)
Jesus was explaining that it is not enough to be born of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, but that you must have a spiritual birth.
Both Covenants contain Laws to be kept, but the Sinai Covenant which came 430 years after the promise to Abraham contained hundreds of more Laws that were added because of transgressions. There were blessings in the Sinai Covenant for all who kept the Book of the Law but curses for anyone who broke them,
-"For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, to perform them." (3:10)
This may sound like the Book of the Law itself is a curse but the curse comes when one of the Laws are violated. When Moses read the Book of the Law to the people they all said, -"We will keep them" by which they entered into a Covenant with God at Sinai. Moses then sprinkled the Book and the people with animal blood to ratify the Covenant. But the people did not obey the Laws but continually broke them, -"For if that first Covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second. For finding fault with them, He says, . . .’For they did not continue in My Covenant, and I did not care for them.’" (Heb.8)
All have sinned and have come short of the glory of God. As sinners we are all subject to the penalty of sin which is death in the Lake of Fire. Laws can reveal to us what sin is, but there is no Law that can forgive sin. The Bible says that only by the shedding of blood can sins be forgiven. The blood of animals could not remove our sins - it takes the righteous blood of the Son of God.
Whether Jew or Greek, all were cursed because all violated God’s righteous Laws - the Jews in the letter and the Gentiles in their hearts. Now God had a problem. He loved us but we were separated from Him by our sins. Sin is an abomination to God so in order to draw us near to Him He had to make us righteous. He did this by giving His only Son as an offering in our place - as a propitiation, which means Jesus absorbed the wrath due for our sins. Jesus actually became our curse that we might become His righteousness and be reconciled to God, - "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." (2 Cor.)

Comments and Questions and Answers
Mr. Lasiter
I am a former member of the Worldwide Church of God, prior to its demise after the death of Mr. Armstrong. I am aware that there are number of groups that, for the most part, still follow the WCG teachings.
For a long time now, I have been struggling with the question, "What Calendar did Jesus Use?" and found a couple of relevant articles on your website.
At this time, I am just looking for answers to a couple of questions:
1. Joshua chapter 6 details how Jericho was destroyed in seven days. Which day of the seven was the Sabbath?
2. Assuming a Wednesday crucifixion (which does occur occasionally) and a Saturday resurrection, this would make the 10th of Nissan also a Saturday, which if it is a Sabbath, prohibits the selection and purchasing of the Passover lambs. How can this be? I await your reply, Shalom, John C.
Dear Brother John,
Why are you struggling with what calendar Jesus used my brother? Since I am a Pastor and very busy, I've never had the available time to do my own personal extensive study on the calendar issue, but I had studied it off and on for 20 years. I have discussed the issues with many knowledgeable people who held differing views.
I feel that I have heard every conceivable argument from both sides, and I am personally completely convinced that Daniel was likely in charge of the calendar in Babylon, that it was the same calendar that Ezra, Nehemiah, and Joshua the High Priest used when they rebuilt the Temple, and the same calendar that was in use during Christ and His disciple's time.
And this is a sacred oracle that God entrusted the Levitical Priesthood to carry out-they sounded the shofar on the first day of the month and received the sacrifices on the Holy Days that they had determined the time for.
I believe that when the Sanhedrin disbanded in the fourth century AD Hillel released the formula that had been used since at least the time of Daniel. And when people saw the postponements in the calculations some took issue with it. I has been an issue that has caused much division among Feast keepers since. Those who take it upon themselves to create their own calendars are divided among themselves in so many ways. As you probably know our Feast of Tabernacles observance begins Thursday. We are packing in order to leave tomorrow as I write to you. This also means that I will be out of pocket until the Feast if over. Hope you may join us next year, we'd love to have you.
There is only one weekly Sabbath which God made holy and set apart on creation week. It is a memorial of the Creator and of His creation-a weekly reminder. We entered into His rest when we observe the Sabbath according to the Commandment. (Heb. 4) This it the same Sabbath day that Jesus instructed His end time followers to pray that their flight from Anti Christ would not fall on that day. (Matt. 24) And it was the same Sabbath day that Joshua knew and observed.
Concerning the Passover lambs, God's original intent is found in Exodus 12 where Passover lambs were taken from the flock and shared with other families if appropriate and needed. There was no purchase as to what was taking place during the time of Jesus. Knowing that Passover comes every Nissan 14 and that a family was to take a lamb to their dwelling on the 10th to come to love it that the sacrifice would be meaningful and painful, there he was no need to purchase a lamb on 10th. A family could have easily purchased the lamb at any date and then picked it up or brought it near on the 10th. Blessings, Brother Larry
Pastor Larry,
I just want to say thank you for your YouTube channel, I have been listening to all of your live steam today for the first time. I am in Norfolk, England.
I first found you a couple of weeks ago when i watched your 'Is Christmas Christian' video. I personally came out of traditions and crossed over' at passover this year, coming out of church and observing Saturday Sabbath, i was in a small Messianic congregation, but not now. Have been a believer for 22 years, and have been to different churches and met many people but am now quite isolated.
Your videos have confirmed many things and I will continue to watch. I have not yet watched the one about Torah observation, but will. Anyway, it seems, people I have met, a few Messianic believers who observe Sabbath and think the way is to get into Judaism, or go to a synagogue, to the point of conversion, a couple of other groups, two which observe some feast days but fit it all neatly in with Christmas and Easter on the calendar also. Mixing and mingling. It's bizarre! I feel unwell when I am in such environments.
So, I told a few people in recent weeks, in one of these mixing places, that I was feeling isolated and losing my joy (well getting depressed actually) but they just looked at me, they couldn’t relate. I had a peaceful 25th, home alone but either side its been difficult. I have received comfort today by the sober messages and surprised after at the upbeat worship, i was singing along then the holy spirit started to minister to my pain. Thankyou for the main message, the kind words that will help me explain my view to this that may ask me what I did for Christmas! I also watched that jim baker show and was kind of disappointed! Yes, everyone I meet is in the land of shifting shadows. It was overall an excellent message. Could you please pray for me? Its a very lonely path and I need strengthening.
Bless you all, Julianne T.
Thank you for writing! We are so happy to know that you have found our ministry helpful. And it's encouraging to find a truth seeker in our world which has grown so dark. If you haven't visited our web site you will find hundreds of articles, booklets and videos there. www.pointsoftruth.com Brother Larry
I'm a faithful Christian who is searching for a Sabbath-keeping church in Perth, WA, Australia. I was wondering if you have a Sabbath service on Saturday or if you can recommend one? If so, please confirm time that worship begins and ends, and the address? I look forward to your reply only if you are a Sabbath keeping Church or know of one. God Bless, Sara
Dear Sara
Sorry to say, we do not have a Church in Australia, though we do have a few there who consider themselves affiliated with us. We live stream our Sabbath Services from YouTube each week and YouTube records them. These videos can be found at the Crusade Church Channel. Blessings, Brother Larry
I found your videos on You tube, and your website, and I am very happy to see there is a church that follows the New Testament, speaks the truth about X-mas and Easter, and keeps the Sabbath and the feasts! am in I Arizona, near Tucson, and would like to find a church like yours. Is there a nationwide network or association of churches like yours? Blessings! Mike V.
I'm sure that there are Churches like ours but there is no network of them as far as I know. There are a few organizations that observe the Sabbath and the Holy Days but most of them teach a distorted Gospel message. I will see if I can find one near you. I'm not sure if you are aware of it, but we live stream our services from our YouTube site each Sabbath from 10:30 am cst to 1:30 pm cst, so you can tune in if you like.

I praise YHVH for delivering to me your message about the contrast of the Abraham covenant and the Sinai covenant. My family was pulled out of our church to seek Biblical truth, which has not been taught by modern' churches. We have been seeking this way for about 5 years and have recognized where the 'old' testament actually has been more relevant for believers than we were ever taught. Your exposition on Yeshua ratifying the Abrahamic covenant with His blood, and thus enacting a promise (covenant) thereby 'putting to rest' the laws which were added due to transgression...has made so any difficult points easier to understand.
I do not know any local locations which may teach this understanding. Do you have any thoughts on how we can have community around us? We want to continue to follow YHVH's feasts and Sabbaths and clean eating
but now see where this doesn't follow messianic or regular Christian doctrines. I pray for eyes to see and ears to hear. Sincerely, Matt and Janet G. West Palm Beach, Florida
Dear Matt and Janet,
I praise God that you found our Two Covenant teaching helpful. I believe it must be being taught other places but I don't know of any. However there are many individuals like yourself who have joyously received our teaching. God began to reveal this truth to me in the late 1990's and it has grown and been confirmed by more and more Scriptures. The booklet really needs to be updated because there are many more references now than when we published it. We have produced a video presentation that explains much of this truth, "Should Christians be Torah Observant?" Blessings, Brother Larry
