Present Yourself A Living Sacrifice

True repentance is of the heart. It is not necessarily always seen in a person’s actions, though true repentance does produce humility and conviction of the heart. The goal of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not to make bad people good, but to give dead people life. King Saul was the first man chosen to rule Israel and was anointed and given the Holy Spirit of God. Saul appeared to be a humble man even though he was physically imposing. When the time came for Samuel to anoint Saul as king he could not be found. Turns out that he was hiding behind some baggage -so obviously the thought of being king caused him anxiety. The Bible says that in the beginning Saul was "small in his own eyes."

At a time when Israel was at war with the Philistines Samuel the Priest was to come to the camp to offer a sacrifice for the Lord’s blessing in battle -but he had not come. The king now had a problem - the enemy was near, and because there had been no offering some of Saul’s soldiers were leaving the camp in fear. What was the king to do? He was not a Priest and therefore was not authorized to offer such an offering. And if he went into battle without God’s blessing he believed he would surely be defeated. After becoming convinced that Samuel would not arrive before the battle, the king made the foolish decision to perform the duties of a Priest and give the offering. Surely he believed that God would understand the dire circumstances and accept this offering in seeking the Lord’s help in battle. There is no doubt that Saul thought of "rational" reasons as to why his act would be received and accepted by the Lord -after all, the Lord’s chosen Priest for the task had not arrived at the appointed time -the seven days had just ended.

Why was offering this sacrifice so foolish?

Because Saul had disobeyed a direct command from the Prophet Samuel who had said, -"Go down ahead of me to Gilgal. I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings. You shall wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you should do." (1 Samuel 10:8) The seven days had come to an end, but just barely. God was obviously testing Saul to see if he would wait for Samuel and trust in the Lord, or act presumptuously as a fool. Would the man whom God had entrusted with the authority to lead His people submit to authority himself? Saul failed the test which revealed impatience, rebellion, and self-reliance.

Israel entered the battle with the Philistines and were victorious! Saul surely believed that this was a true sign that the Lord had accepted his offering. But at this time the word of the Lord came to Samuel saying, "I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following Me and has not carried out My commands." (1 Samuel 15:10-11) Saul had also failed to obey God’s command to not take any of the spoils of battle, but had spared the best of the sheep and oxen to "offer to the Lord."

After weeping all night over God rejecting Saul, Samuel finally came to the king. Saul came and said, "Blessed are you of the Lord! I have carried out the command of the Lord." Samuel told Saul that because he did not obey the Lord fully that he was rejected as Israel’s king, and then said, -"Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you rejected the word of the Lord, He has also rejected you from being king." Furthermore, God took the Holy Spirit from Saul and sent an evil spirit to torment him, though Saul begged for forgiveness. Judging by appearances this seems like a harsh judgment from the Lord considering the circumstances. After all, it seems that everything Saul did was "for" the Lord. He presented the offering "for" the Lord, and he kept the best of the animals "for" the Lord. And he did wait the entirety of the seven days for Samuel. But something was obviously amiss-something unseen by the eye. I submit that it was a matter of the heart - God could see that Saul was not repentant in his heart. Saul failed to submit himself, his will, upon God’s Altar as a willing sacrifice and wait upon the Lord.

God is all knowing

And this is something that we should meditate upon. The Bible says that God declares the end from the beginning. For example, Jesus knew which disciple would betray Him beforehand. I am sure that God "can" know what every person will choose, but I am not sure that He always chooses to know in every case. This would mean that even when a person such as Solomon begins with a sincere and faithful walk that God could already know that he would fall away in the end. God is perfectly just, which would explain why He twice entreated Solomon to repent of his idolatry -perhaps knowing already that he would reject those appeals. Since God has the power to know the end of every person from the beginning, we need never entertain the thought that God is unfair because we observe Him appearing to be more patient with some than others. He may simply already know their heart -and can clearly see that in the end they will reject Him. Consider also, that God’s patience and endurance may be for someone else’s benefit.

Jesus was asked if many would be saved and He said that only a few will enter through the "narrow gate" and travel the "narrow road" to life, but many would follow the "wide road" to destruction. Jesus warned that many false teachers would come preaching in His name but deceiving many. He said that many will declare to Him on the Day of Judgment all the things they did in the name of Jesus -"prophesying" and "performing many miracles." But Jesus will not be impressed and say, "I never knew you. Depart from Me you who practice lawlessness." Practicing lawlessness is failing to live according to God’s Commandments. The fourth Commandment says "Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy" yet how many Christians today obey this commandment? Most Christian Churches are empty on Saturday. Though the Sabbath is a gift to man from God, the reason that God gives for keeping it is -"for in six days the Lord your God created the heavens and the earth and all things in them, and rested on the seventh day (not the first); Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." The Sabbath alone is blessed and holy and was given to man as a memorial of the Creator God. Since the Commandment begins with "Remember the Sabbath Day" we can safely surmise that people had forgotten. Those who keep the Sabbath are actively acknowledging that "God" is the "Creator." When people stopped remembering the Sabbath day they were subjected to the deception that created things such as certain animals and heavenly bodies like the sun were gods.

Sin is a rebellion problem

The first rebel was an angel whom God had given charge over a third of the angelic host to exercise dominion and management over the pre-man earth. All was well until he became filled with pride and vanity and ascended to Heaven in an attempt to take his Maker’s Throne. He was defeated by Michael and his angelic army and was cast back down to the earth as the "great dragon" "Satan the devil." Usurping any authority is direct rebellion against God, -"Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves." (Romans 13: 1-2)

This judgment of condemnation is a very scary thought, especially knowing that we all are rebellious by nature. What can we say to God on Judgment Day if we have lived in presumptuous or direct rebellion? What will be the excuse for profaning God’s blessed and holy Sabbath day? Surely one could not say "I went to services on Sunday because I was following the crowd." That sounds a lot like "traveling the wide road of destruction." We should never step out of authority. Throughout the history of Israel there were more bad kings than good ones. But as long as God left a king in power the people were expected to endure and pray without taking matters into their own hands. Those who will not submit and follow ordained authority can never be entrusted with authority themselves. Saul was rejected as king of Israel and David was already anointed to be king, but David would not dare do anything but wait upon the Lord. He never raised his hand against Saul, or attempted to take the throne by force.

In contrast to Saul, let’s look at David

The king whom God chose to replace Saul was David. As king, David stole away another’s man wife to commit adultery with her. Urriah, Bathsheba’s husband was a loyal soldier in David’s army and was away at war. When Bathsheba became pregnant David conspired to have her husband killed. After this dirty deed was done he took her as his wife. David was an adulterer, a liar, a thief, a murderer and a covetous man. All of this is far worse than what king Saul had done, yet David was not rejected by God. The Lord even said of him, "He is a man after My Own Heart!" The Lord could see past the momentary wicked actions and see a pure and repentant heart in David.

David had loved the Lord since his youth. As a young shepherd boy he would gaze at the heavens and glorify God for all the majesty that he saw. He was very faithful, even having the faith to fight a lion and a bear to protect his father’s sheep. He gave God all the glory for prevailing over these mighty beasts. Also as a youth he confronted Goliath, the Philistine giant in faith and slew him in the presence of the Lord’s army. But later as king he somehow drifted into his flesh and committed these horrific evils. And though David continued to write and sing songs to the Lord, give offerings and read the Scriptures, he had become blinded to the woeful spiritual condition which he had sunken into. Perhaps there was a partial blinding from the Lord. Because of David’s love and desire for fellowship with the Lord, the devil surely worked hard and craftily in his tempting of the king.

One day the Prophet Nathan walked into the throne room and told David a sad story about a rich man who had coveted a little ewe lamb that belonged to a poor man. This rich man already had many lambs but the poor man had only the one ewe lamb whom he loved even saying that it was like a daughter to him. This rich, covetous man took the poor man’s only lamb from him. At this point in the story David burned with anger and exploded in indignation, saying, -"As the Lord lives, surely the man who has done this deserves to die! He must make restitution for the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and had no compassion!" Then Nathan said to David, "You are that man! Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in His sight?" Suddenly the scales of delusion dropped from the king’s eyes and his heart was severely pierced. What was going through David’s mind? He had personally witnessed how God had taken the Holy Spirit from Saul and sent an evil spirit to torment him. He had seen this spirit come upon Saul many times as he played music for the king as a youth. Being broken David said, "I have sinned against the Lord."

Unlike Saul, David offered no excuses. He knew that he had done evil in the sight of the Lord and deserved death. He was broken because he had sinned so grievously against the Lord whom he loved. Then a remarkable thing happened. Nathan said to David, "The Lord has taken away your sin; you shall not die." Notice that David’s sin was not merely forgiven but was "taken away." Nathan then explained to David that though he had been forgiven there would still be terrible consequences for his actions. The baby in Bathsheba’s womb would die because David had given the Lord’s enemies an opportunity to blaspheme. There would be war all the years of his reign. And David’s own wives would be publicly violated in the presence of all Israel by one of his own sons. But unlike Saul, David had a humble, contrite and repentant heart. David understood that he stood condemned by his actions and was worthy of death. He knew his only hope was in the mercy and grace of the Lord. And whether the Lord forgave him or not David was willing to lay himself upon the Altar of God in faith.

God wants you on the Altar

Romans 12 says that God wants your body, your earthen vessel as a willing and living sacrifice. God is not seeking something theological -something intellectually stimulating from you. God says, "I want that earthen vessel in which you live -and I’m not going to be satisfied with anything less - offer your body to Me on My holy Altar of service."

"Therefore I urge you brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:1-2) Under the old covenant, whenever someone laid an animal on the altar they no longer owned that animal. The Bible says that those who come to Christ for forgiveness and salvation no longer belong to themselves but to God who purchased them, -"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body." (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

For us this requires a total surrender. God can do what He wills with your body -it belongs to Him. When we surrender we recognize that the Lord can use our body as He wills. This, of course, can only be achieved with a truly repentant heart. Repentance is more than turning from practicing certain sins, it is turning away from self, self pleasing, self will, making your own decisions.

Notice that the Apostle "urged" the brethren to present their bodies "by the mercies of God." Paul had Apostolic authority but here rather made an appeal to the brethren. Consider how merciful the Lord has been and continues to be to us -giving His only Son as a sacrifice for our sins and welcoming us into His divine Family through a new birth. We present our bodies on God’s Altar by refusing to be "conformed to his world" and by being "transformed by the renewing of our minds." We refuse the old worldly thoughts which bring us into bondage and shame, and joyfully accept and focus on the truth that our old man no longer lives for we are now a new creature in Christ -pure, undefiled, unblemished and without sin.

Because Christ, our Passover has been sacrificed we are no longer leavened, that is found with sin, but are in fact made unleavened, -"Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed." (1 Corinthians 5:7) Leavening is of course a type for sin -Jesus said, "Beware the leavening of the Pharisees." Because Christ our Passover has been sacrificed our sins have been paid in full and we have been justified -meaning, having no record of sin. We can now celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread with great joy knowing that we have been made pure before the Lord.

The Difference in the Old and New

The beloved Apostle Paul understood well the difference between who he was in Adam (the flesh) and who he was in Christ. (the Spirit) God’s Laws are Spiritually discerned, and no one can truly obey them without being led by the Holy Spirit, which is "the Lord" Himself (2 Cor.3:17) and even then all we can do is obey them in our mind because our flesh will always fall short."But I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me." Romans 7:16-17

Paul lamented the fact that he sometimes practiced the very things that he hated. He agreed with God’s Law but sometimes struggled to obey it because the Law of sin and death was at work through the body of death that was present with him at all times. Recognizing that he hated the deeds of the flesh carried out by the members of his body, he concluded that he was not the one doing these things. It was not the new creature in Christ, the spirit man, but the body of death which was ever present with him. In Christ, there is a new Law at work, the Law of the Spirit of Life. Our desire and willingness to obey God’s Commandments is service to God - even though in the flesh we fail daily. Our failures are in the flesh but our true and victorious life is in the Spirit where we are perfect and just in the eyes of God. Like Paul, we who hate sin and the desires of the flesh have been saved from the Law of sin and death by the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus, -"Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the Law of sin and of death." (Romans 8:1-2) Let us understand and receive this in the same way that Paul did -that if we hate the lawless deeds of the body of death then it is not us doing them. God is looking for a repentant heart.

Though Paul knew and experienced that he was born again and filled with the Holy Spirit, he also understood that he was living in a fleshly body that was sold into the bondage of sin, -"For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand." (Romans 7:14-15) In his CONDITION the Apostle saw that his flesh was sold into the bondage of sin, yet his POSITION was a new creature in Christ. It’s as if he had a alter-ego who was driven by the lusts of the flesh. There are a few foods that I have just never developed a liking to -asparagus is one of them. So if you ever believe that you happen to see me eating asparagus and enjoying it -it’s surely not me - maybe you should call an exorcist! In my mind I have no desire to eat asparagus, so if I see the members of my body craving it, I understand that it is not the real me doing it. And that is what Paul is explaining about his struggle with the body of death and with the Law of sin and death. I hope you found this silly example amusing, but also revealing.

If we fail to do this the enemy will cause our hearts to feel condemned, -"We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us we have confidence before God." (1 John 3:19-21)

"Let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water." (Hebrews 10:22) Though the flesh dies when we come to Jesus, the conscience and the heart remains. This is why our text says that our hearts must be sprinkled clean to protect us from an evil conscience. We are given a type for this when the High Priest entered through the veil and sprinkled the Mercy Seat with the blood of a sacrifice to atone for sins. The sacrifice, the flesh, had already been offered and burned on the altar, but now comes the role of the blood which cleanses our hearts. Under the Old Covenant the sacrifices and the ritual had to be done every year because the blood of animals could not atone for sin. These things served as a reminder of sins - was only a shadow of the reality that a holy sacrifice was still needed which came in Christ, the Lamb of God. We can receive salvation yet still be hindered by an evil conscience which reminds us of our sins -in Christ there should be no reminder. David, a man after God’s own heart cried, -"Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit in me." (Ps.51) His evil conscience was reminding him of sins which God had already forgiven him of. David knew he needed his heart sprinkled and cleansed by the blood to walk unshackled by guilt. The blood satisfies God’s wrath.

We are all born with the fallen nature of Adam. Adam is a sinner by nature -he and his offspring can do nothing but produce sin. Adam cannot be rehabilitated. Adam must die, -"So then, as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous." (Romans 5:18-19) And also, -"Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Christ, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin." (Romans 6:6-7)

Not by might but by My Spirit

After correcting a sister concerning her acting in a carnal way, she assured me that no matter how hard the struggle that she was going to try her best to do better. I told her that it was the flesh in her that had acted out and that no one can use a fleshly effort to battle the flesh. Will-power is not enough to defeat the flesh, it takes the Spirit of God. Just as it took the creation of a new Law, the Law of the Spirit of Life to deal with the old Law of sin and of death. You can’t really do it, but Christ in you can. In fact, you are more than a conqueror in Christ. In position, we are already in Christ. But in condition, we are very much susceptible to the body of death.

When we think about laying our bodies down on God’s Altar as a willing and living sacrifice -our spiritual service of worship -it has to be done piece by piece. When a Priest slays a lamb he cuts it into pieces to be offered -some he has the authority to keep for himself. But he offers piece by piece on the Altar. And that is how we must do with the desires of the flesh which plague us. If we happen to struggle with unrighteous anger, then make a conscious decision to lay it on the Altar and pray, -"Father, I hate this and I don’t want it acting out anymore in the members of my body. I am helpless against it on my own but I willingly lay it on the Altar to be burned until it is no more. Fill me now with the Spirit to empower me over this pull of the flesh." True repentance begins with a conscious decision to lay self down and say "Your will be done Lord." It is very much like trusting the Lord to heal you of an affliction. The Scriptures say, "He, Himself bore our sickness, and our sorrows He carried." (Isaiah 53:4) Whatever you lay down on the Altar the Lord will take, whether it’s a sin, weakness or affliction.

The Bible says that our body is a Temple of God because God dwells in us by the Holy Spirit. Think of our Temple as being a very large Spiritual House with many rooms that one by one must be cleared out for the Lord to live. There are "rooms" in each of our lives that need to be cleared and cleansed. Rooms which are not yet ready for the Master of the house to dwell. The sanctification process of salvation is much like allowing the Lord access to room by room, little by little, until He, through the Spirit, has removed all that was of us and replaced it with all that is Him.

God wants our conscience to be sensitive and our hearts to be soft so that we can truly hate evil and love righteousness, but we must not give the devil opportunity by receiving lying accusations against us. Though the body of sin and death is present with us, it is not us - we are a new creation in Christ and in Him there is no condemnation.

No saint past, present or future has the power to produce a righteousness worthy of the presence of the Lord. This is why God not only removes our sins, but clothes us with the righteousness of His Son. The devil wants to accuse you but the Lord has already declared you innocent in Christ.

Paul concluded that since he hated sin, loved the Law of God and wanted to obey it, that anything short of that was not produced by him but by the body of death present with him. Paul did not own the sin, he acknowledged the righteousness. An awakened conscience and a sincere heart must receive the truth that we are in Christ, and in Him there is no sin.

However, we must be sure that we are living in Christ, for there are many who profess His name who are not. Jesus said that those who keep the Commandments abide in Him, so do not be deceived into believing that you are living in the truth of Christ while practicing lawless rebellion. "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you - unless indeed you fail the test?" (2 Cor.13)

The Origin of Our Old Testament

The Old Testament has been translated and canonized five separate times in history. Who is responsible for the Old Testament we have today -and is it reliable? These are important questions because we must know that the OT Scriptures have been faithfully preserved. There have been critics who have suggested that certain books which were left out of the canonization should have been included. And there are critics who claim that the current translation has been compromised because the vowel pointers needed to distinctly pronounce God’s name were not added, and instead the vowel pointers for adonia which simply means "Lord" were added. As a result, wherever the name "YHWH" is written "Lord" is read aloud. At face value this itself seems quite nefarious and the cries of "lying Scribes!" seem justified. But we should always be careful to not have knee-jerk reactions, and gather all the facts needed to make an educated search for the truth. When a task is needed God provides -and those whom He chooses for that task has His authority to complete it.

The first five books -the books of Moses (Torah) have never been in question. A casual reading of the Torah reveals that Israel’s religious worship centered around the Tabernacle and later the Temple with the Priesthoods of Aaron and Levi entrusted with the administration. The Old Testament is essentially a Levitical document which was canonized under the authority of the Aaronic Priesthood. To canonize means to fix a "rule or measuring rod" and is a process by which a collection of writings are established as being authoritative, difinitive, and fixed by an ordained religious authority. A canonical book is one that conforms to the canon,-that is, it passes the test of authenticity. The current Old Testament is the same one that the Apostle Paul was referring to when he wrote, -"All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness." (2Timothy 3:16) The word "inspired" in this verse means "God breathed."

What led to this Translation and Canonization?

The Jews were conquered by Babylon in about 586 BC and many were carried to Babylon to live in exile. Jeremiah had prophesied that this would occur and told the people to make their homes in Babylon until the seventy year judgment was completed. Afterwards the people would be allowed to return, and 42,000 did. The Ten Tribes of the Northern Kingdom were conquered earlier in 721 BC by the Assyrians and were carried away as slaves. The Assyrians placed people of non-Israel descent in their land. These people learned to speak Hebrew from the scattered Israelites who had remained. They also added Israel’s God to the gods they were already worshiping.

In The Jewish Canon and the Christian Canon, Dr. Kip L. Wheeler points out that the idea of a finalized Hebrew canon first began to emerge shortly after the Babylonian exile. He notes that it was the Jews’ fear of religious "contamination" that motivated them to create an "official version of the various Scriptures and gather them into one organic collection." Indeed, the primary reason for the final compilation of the sacred Aaronic writings into an authentic, authoritative canon of Scripture was to combat an insidious counterfeit system of worship arising out of Samaria during the post-exilic period.

From "The Canonization of the Old Testament" by Carl Franklin, -"Historically, a counterfeit form of Judaic worship emerged from Samaria, north of Jerusalem, in the fifth century BC led by the apostate high priest Manassah. (Recall that Samaria and the area previously occupied by the northern tribes of Israel had long been repopulated by Gentiles following Israel’s exile—II Kings 17.) After marrying the daughter of Sanballat, the governor of Samaria, Manassah was confronted by Ezra the priest, who demanded that Manassah and his fellow priests put away their foreign wives. Manassah refused, and he and his rebel priests defected to Samaria where Sanballat had built a Jerusalem-like temple for Manassah and his apostate priests. Astonishingly, Manassah’s new apostate religion incorporated all of the rituals described in the Law, the only portion of the Hebrew texts accepted by the rogue priests."

"Ezra and the Great Assembly of 120 priests—as well as the Jews of Jerusalem and Judea—found themselves confronted with a counterfeit form of temple worship that professed to uphold the laws of Moses. Its counterfeit temple stood on Mount Gerizim, the Mount of Blessing, near Jacob’s Well. Ezra perceived that this false religion was a real threat to the pure worship of the true God which he and others had worked to restore to the post-exilic Jews. Something drastic had to be done to protect the true worship of God from being corrupted by this new Samaritan-Jewish apostasy.

To accomplish this, Ezra and the Great Assembly began to exercise firm authority over every aspect of worship at the temple of God in Jerusalem and in the numerous Jewish synagogues scattered throughout the Persian empire. The Great Assembly supervised and regulated the temple rites and sacrifices, priestly laws, synagogue rituals and everything associated with the worship of God under the Old Covenant. Every act of worship had to be thoroughly and completely scriptural, centered at the temple in Jerusalem—and approved by Ezra and the Great Assembly."

"In order to preserve the true worship of God, it was essential to differentiate between the sacred Hebrew texts of the Jerusalem Jews and the Hebrew writings utilized by the apostate Samaritan Jews. The key step was to organize the sacred Levitical documents into a final, closed canon of Scripture. Then, accurate copies of the entire canonized text were made and distributed to Jewish synagogues throughout the Persian empire. Once canonized, the Scriptures could be preserved without fear of corruption."

Who was the Great Assembly?

The men of the Great Assembly, also known as the Great Synagogue, or Synod, was an assembly of 120 scribes, sages, and prophets, in the period from the end of the Biblical prophets since the early Second Temple period to the early Hellenistic period. It comprised such prophets as Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah, Nehemiah, , Mordechai, Zerubabel, Shaaltiel, among others and was headed by Ezra. Sometimes, the Great Assembly is simply designated as "Ezra and his court of law." Among the developments in Judaism that are attributed to them are the fixing of the Jewish Biblical canon, including the Book of Ezekiel, Daniel, Esther, and the Twelve Minor Prophets; the introduction of the Feast of Purim. These extraordinary sages preserved God’s Word and defined the essence of Judaism for the Jews of Israel and the Diaspora. Obviously, God had given these great scholars the authority and surely directed their work by His Spirit.

Ezra edited the OT

In "Getting Acquainted with the Bible", Martin Hegland writes: "There is much evidence to indicate that the canon of the Old Testament was fixed by about the year 400 BC largely as a result of the work of Ezra and Nehemiah and a council of Jews known as the Great Synagogue… Long before that time, however, many of the books we now have in the Old Testament had been agreed upon as inspired"

From "The Canonization of the Old Testament" by Carl Franklin, -"Indeed, Ezra—a priest of the Aaronic line—returned to Jerusalem from Babylon in 458 BC with "the Law of God" in his hands (Ezra 7:14), and boldly proclaimed the Law before the post-exilic congregation of Judah (Neh. 8-9). Ezra undoubtedly had in his possession numerous additional texts regarded as canonical—such as writings by the prophets, as well as those that make up the "Writings" of the Old Testament."

"While the preceding periods of canonization are significant, scholars generally consider them to be primarily of historical interest. Martin, for example, writes that the canonization efforts prior to Ezra "do not involve what books belong in the Old Testament canon for us today. The question of exactly which books represent the complete Old Testament for us can only be answered by understanding the canonization of Ezra and those one hundred and twenty priests who comprised the Great Assembly. It is Ezra’s final work which is most important to us and to later Judaism… it was Ezra who gave to the Jewish world the official (and final) Old Testament to be read in the Temple and synagogues. This makes the canonization by Ezra the most important of all" (Restoring the Original Bible, ch. 12)."

"Like Moses, Ezra’s edits consisted largely of updating ancient geographical names with newer names. Where older names were retained, explanatory phrases were sometimes added to identify them. Other edits provide additional information. Genesis 36:31–39, for example, records the names of Edomite kings down to the time of King Saul. Moses could not have written this section because he would hardly have known the names of Edomite kings living three hundred years after his death."

"Another example which could not have been penned by Moses occurs in Deuteronomy 34:5-6: "And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab … [but] no man knows of his grave to this day." Again, Moses could hardly have written: "And there has not arisen a prophet like Moses since then in Israel, whom the LORD knew face-to-face" (verse 10). Other edits provide the reader with an updated timeline—such as in Judges 18:30, which records events occurring hundreds of years after the Judges ruled. Edits made by Ezra as a part of the final canonization were obviously designed to update the text and make it more understandable to the people of his day. Ezra must have felt that the texts needed editing in order to provide the Jews with the complete revelation of God."

IN CONCLUSION: Jesus made a number of claims supporting the reliability of the Old Testament. Jesus affirmed seven key points in relation to the Old Testament, as explained by Christian systematic theologian Norman Geisler: "Jesus affirmed its divine authority … its imperishability … its unbreakability … its ultimate supremacy … its factual inerrancy … its historical reliability … and its scientific accuracy." Matthew 5:17-18 sums up the approach Jesus took in confirming the reliability of the Old Testament: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished." This means, that not only was every single book that God wanted included has been, but that every "single stroke of the pen" and "smallest letter" has been preserved -including the inspired vowel pointers. (Which is why Jesus read aloud "Lord" in Luke 4:17-19 for YHWH) Jesus found no fault with Ezra’s translation and canonization.

 

Why we do not use the Sacred Name

From time to time I am asked why we do not use the sacred Name for God. My short answer is- 1. All we have are the consonants "YHWH" but no vowels. There is no complete Name or method to pronounce it without the vowels, and God has not seen fit to preserve those vowels in His Word. 2. The vowels for "adonai" (meaning "Lord") were placed under the Name to remind readers to say "Lord" instead of attempting to pronounce the Name itself. This was done by the authority given to Ezra and the Great Assembly when they translated and canonized the Old Testament. This was the fifth and final translation and canonization of the O.T. and it is believed that the previous four had no written vowel pointers at all. This means that the vowels necessary were passed down and preserved orally. According to oral tradition as later recorded in the Mishna, the Aaronic Priesthood was entrusted to preserve and to speak the sacred Name. 3. Jesus and His Apostles were never recorded as using the sacred Name, instead telling their followers to call God "Abba" meaning Father. 4. And perhaps most important, our ministry does not have the authority to insert into Scripture what the sages of the OT and the Apostles of the NT left out. For us that would be quite presumptuous.

Having said these things, I want to make it clear that we respect those who have a different opinion, and are not offended when we hear "Yahweh" or "Yahovah" or an equivalent. We believe that most people who attempt to use the sacred Name are zealous for the truth and do have a heart to please the Lord. It’s very tempting at first glance to believe that it is a nefarious thing to place the vowel pointers for adonai under YHWH in order that the Name would not be read aloud. But we always must consider the issue of authority and ask, "What can I do about it? Have I been given the authority to "correct" this perceived "evil?" And "Could I be wrong?"

For us, when we take into account the 120 great scholars of the Great Assembly led by Ezra who made the decision to not include the vowels for the Name, we have to believe that it was God’s will to do so -especially since Jesus nor His Apostles made a "correction."

The Significance of names

In Jewish thought, a name is not merely an arbitrary designation, a random combination of sounds. The name conveys the nature and essence of the thing named. It represents the history and reputation of the person named. Because a name represents the reputation of the thing named, a name should be treated with the same respect as the thing's reputation. For this reason, God's Names, in all of their forms, are treated with enormous respect and reverence in Judaism. The first Name used for God in Scripture is Elohim which is a uniplural word. God is also known as El Shaddai. This Name is usually translated as "God Almighty." There are also many other names.

YHWH

The most important of God's Names is the four-letter Name represented by the Hebrew letters Yod-Hei-Vav-Hei (YHVH). It is often referred to as the "Ineffable Name", the "Unutterable Name" or the "Distinctive Name’ among the Jews. Linguistically, it is related to the Hebrew root Hei-Yod-Hei meaning "I AM" or "TO BE", and reflects the fact that God's existence is eternal. We have an in part version in "YAH", especially when used in combination with names or phrases, as in "HalleluYAH" meaning "praise the Lord." Using "Yah" certainly would not be presumptuous or wrong because this part of the name has been preserved.

The reason no one knows for sure how to pronounce YHWH is because Ezra and the Great Assembly did not add the vowels for the name, but instead placed the vowel pointers for "adonai" in their place. At least since that time "Lord" has been spoken whenever the Scriptures were read. We do not know if the vowel pointers for YHWH were in any of the previous translations. We don’t even know if YHWH, as being spoken distinctly, was ever used in the everyday life of an Israelite. It is readily clear that the tradition to say "adonai" in it’s place goes all the way back to the period of the second Temple which Ezra and his team built. The Jews have believed for millennia that to attempt to pronounce YHWH fully was blasphemy.

This apparently goes back at least to the time of Ezra which would give him reason to insert the adonai vowels under the YHWH consonants. The Scripture cited is Leviticus 24:16, -"The one who blasphemes the Name of the Lord shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The alien as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death." In the Hebrew text this can be translated "he who speaks the Name distinctly has blasphemed." Most scholars believe that this passage is forbidding using God’s Name in speaking a curse and not in using the Name itself -but we really do not know. Whether a misunderstanding of the passage or not, it was a capital offence in Israel to attempt to pronounce the sacred Name distinctly. Since "Yah" was used perhaps speaking distinctly meant saying plainly the full Name.

In addition to the Bible the Jews had traditions which had been passed down orally and eventually recorded in written form called the Mishna. The Mishna is widely accepted by the academic world and by the Jewish community as a historically accurate source. Not being a scholar on the subject, I cannot personally vouch that everything in the book is God’s will, especially knowing that Jesus spoke ill of many of the traditions of the elders. But I do believe that the writings reveal the traditional practices from hundreds of years before Christ and after. The Mishna says that God’s name was pronounced in the Temple by the Priests when they said the Aaronic blessing, (Sotah 7:6) and by the High Priest on the Day of Atonement, Yoma 6:2 says,- "they pronounced the name as it was written." Since the vowels for the Name were not there, the Priest must have committed the pronunciation to memory. The Jewish Philosopher Philo Judaeus of Alexandria who lived during the time of Jesus also confirms that when the Temple stood the name of God was only spoken on special occasions by the Priests in the Temple.

The Mishna says that the name of God was only spoken by the Priests in the Temple for special occasions. In addition, Sanhedrin 7:5 says that pronouncing the Name in other contexts was considered blasphemy, which was a capital offence punishable by death. This compares favorably with the Jews interpretation of Leviticus 24:16. Again Philo confirms that this tradition was practiced during the time of Jesus, saying, -"But if anyone were to dare to utter His name unseasonably, he must endure the punishment of death."

As for me, I have surely concluded that when Jesus walked the earth the custom of the Jews was to say "adonai" instead of saying God’s Name. I also conclude that when Jesus Me to preach the Gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord." (Verses 17-19) Obviously, Jesus did more than merely read, He must have surely preached since all were "wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips." (Verse 22) In this Scriptural passage "YHWH" appears twice with the vowel pointers for "adonai." Since it was a capital offence to pronounce the Name, if Jesus had spoken the Name He would not have been well received, but would have been declared a blasphemer.

I am well aware of the many places in Scripture declaring the name of God. Many are very zealous to point out those places as proof texts. But in the Bible a name is more than a sound you make with your vocal chords, it is who you are, what you do, your reputation -it is your character. During our prison ministry I was discussing the sacred Name issue with an inmate who quoted the Lord’s Passover prayer in John 17:6, "I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world." I asked "Why do you supposed Jesus declared the Father’s name to His Apostles? Do you suppose it was for the purpose of revealing it to others as they went forth with the Gospel?" The man answered "yes" to my questions. Then I asked, "Then show me a place from Acts through Revelation where they did that, mentioning the Father’s name as in a set of spoken syllables?" The inmate had never thought to ask that question of himself and had no answer. The Name YHWH is not used in the New Testament.

Those of us in the Sabbath/Holy Day observing crowd often testify to others that we do the things we do because we follow the example of Jesus, the Apostles and the apostolic Church. Jesus did tell His disciples that He was the Way and to follow Him. Paul wrote, "follow me as I follow Christ."

The New Testament Scriptures clearly show Jesus, His Apostles and the early Church as keeping the Sabbath and the Holy Days Festivals. But nowhere do we read the sacred Name for God. Nowhere do we find a command to use the Name YHWH for God, or Yeshua for Jesus. Time and time again we see Jesus referring to God as "Father." And when He cried out on the cross He used the singular form of Elohim, saying "Elohi" but not YHWH.

Some have argued against the name "Jesus" since the English alphabet in past ages didn’t have a letter for "J", claiming that no one spoke the "J" sound. This is quite ridiculous if you truly think about it. English history is filled with names and places which were and are spoken with the "J" sound. The truth is, before the letter "J" was added a small hook was added at the bottom of the lower case "I" for the "J" sound. This is why the J has the shape it does.

In conclusion, I see that YHWH is there. But I also see that the vowels necessary to pronounce it are not. I believe that God has been faithful to preserve His Word uncorrupted. Therefore, I believe that if He wanted His children to call upon YHWH rather then "Abba", He would have preserved the vowels. I can’t even entertain the thought of taking issue with Ezra and the Great Assembly of faithful Prophets and sages who gave us the Old Testament we have today. Think about it, if the O.T. we have today has been corrupted, then we cannot trust the translation or canonization.

To add names which are not found in the Old and New Testaments that has been preserved for me would seem as though I were correcting the Great Assembly and the Apostles of Christ -I just simply would never venture into that.

And though the New Testament contains Hebrew and Aramaic names for places and for people, is does not for God or for Jesus. Of the near 6000 early NT manuscripts discovered to date the name for YHWH and "Yeshua" for Jesus are not found in any of them. The Greek "Kurios" is used for "Lord" and "Theos" is used for "God." The Greek "Iesous" meaning "Jeshua" or "Joshua" which transliterates as "Jesus" - is the name written for our Savior.

 Perhaps God wants to be much more intimate -Jesus said, "Pray this way, Our Father who is in Heaven." For us "Father" is how we are to address God.

 

Why the Hebrew Calendar

From Ron Dart, " A calendar is more than a pretty picture with the days of the month laid out below. A calendar is a system of determining the beginning and ending of the year and dividing it up into seasons, months, weeks, and days. To be of any use at all, it has to be done in advance. A calendar from the past is no more than a diary. By its very nature, a calendar is predictive, and this is why the sun and the moon are so very useful-they are the most predictable elements in the environment of man."

First, let me say that I have proved to my satisfaction that the calculated Hebrew calendar we use to set the annual Holy Days is correct and divinely appointed. I believe it is one of the sacred oracles entrusted to the Jews. (Rom. 3:2 It is the same calendar used by Ezra and the Great Assembly to set the Holy Day observances after rebuilding the Temple. Secondly, it is the same calendar used during the time of Jesus and His Apostles. Ron Dart wrote, "From ancient times, the Sanhedrin had the authority to make the rules and observations that sanctified the Hebrew calendar. Jesus and the apostles seem to have accepted their authority in this area. While there is ample evidence that the early Christians kept the holy days, there is no hint in the New Testament that they ever attempted to sanctify a calendar apart from the Jewish calendar."

If the calendar had been corrupted during the Babylonian captivity as some charge, that would mean that Daniel failed the Lord since the king had put him in charge of all of his affairs. Daniel was faithful to preserve the calendar needed to determine the Holy Days. But if it had been corrupted it would surely have been corrected when God sent Ezra, Nehemiah and others to rebuild the Temple and re-establish worship at the appointed times. We see no calendar controversy in either the Old or New Testament writings.

Thirdly, when the Sanhedrin disbanded, it’s leader, Hillel 2 released the methods used to make the calendar. I have found no evidence that Hillel 2 did anything nefarious-he just released the method to calculate the calendar since the Sanhedrin would no longer be doing it.

For any calendar to work properly there must be rules, and where there are rules there are people in charge of them. We know the Hebrew name of the first month–Abib. And we know that Abib means, "green ears" of barley. Okay, so we decide that the month following the onset of green ears is Abib. But what if the ears turn green on the second day of the new moon? Will they still be green the following month? The ears will often be green in two consecutive months. Which is Abib? The Bible doesn’t say "as soon as green ears appear it’s the first month." The real point is that the wave sheaf of the barley must be brought to the priests to wave to the Lord before anyone could harvest their crops -so it is not so much important when the green ears appear as it is that they are there during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Again, somebody has to make the determination of which month is Abib.

It is an issue of authority

"Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves." (Romans 13: 1-2)

Our God is a God who establishes and works through appointed authorities, and it should be a frightening thought to usurp divine authority. The purpose of the calendar is to determine the times for holy convocations. This means that there is an authority that must be entrusted to call for the people to come -otherwise there could be no unity, only division when the very purpose is for all to come together. The Aaronic Priesthood was given this charge by the Lord and instructed to sound the two silver trumpets at the beginning of each month. So how did the people know when the beginning of a month was? It wasn’t by looking up to observe the moon. It was the hearing of the silver trumpets. Since the Priests of Aaron were commanded to sound the trumpets on the first day of each month, then obviously it was their responsibility to know and declare when that was.

Israel’s worship was collective. The people assembled before the Lord at the Temple when the Priests called them. There was no provision made for individuals to make their own determinations. And the people were commanded by God to not appear empty-handed. They brought offerings. And these offerings were not given directly to the Lord, but to Levite Priests who received and performed the sacrifice for each person. The point is, you needed the Priesthood on these Holy Days. People would also bring offerings on the new moons, the first day of each month and present them to the Priests. What do you think would happen if you determined for yourself, independently, that the Priests were wrong and brought your offering the day before or the day after the sons of Aaron had sounded the silver trumpets? Do you really believe that they would receive your offering when it was not offered at the "appointed time" that they alone had been given the authority to set? "Make yourself two trumpets of silver. . .for summoning the congregation." (Numbers 10:2-10)

The first question every Christian should ask is "Do I have the authority to do what I’m thinking of doing?" We have so many examples of people stepping outside their authority.

A controversy arose in the early Church about whether the Gentile converts were to be circumcised and directed to observe the whole Law of Moses. The brethren held the first council to discuss and decide the issue for the sake of unity. After James announced the decision it was binding truth-though every person was not in agreement. Obviously the issue was not a matter for personal determination. Likewise, concerning the calendar we nowhere see the instruction or the authority given to an individual to decide for himself when a week, a month or a year begins and ends. For me, I fear the Lord far too much to be so presumptuous.

 

Understanding Galatians 4:8-12

"However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again? You observe days and months and seasons and years. I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain. I beg of you, brethren, become as I am, for I also have become as you are."

The heresy taking root in the Galatian Church was a perversion of the true Gospel. Judaizers were following the Apostle Paul disturbing the Gentile congregations he established. They were insisting that gentiles could not be saved without being circumcised and keeping the whole Law of Moses. (Acts 15:1,5) These false teachers obviously believed that the Gentile converts had to be joined to natural Israel to be heirs of the Kingdom, and they had a problem with Paul teaching a new covenant of salvation by grace through faith.

With this firmly in mind, we must conclude that the "days," "months," "seasons" and "years" certainly included the Holy Day Festivals given to Israel. Paul warned the Galatians that to turn back to the Sinai Covenant and its Laws was to be enslaved, -"It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery." (5:1) The Apostle Peter used this same terminology when making a case against having the Gentiles being circumcised and directed to keep the Law of Moses, -"Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are." (Acts 15:10-11) Before their conversion the Gentiles were slaves to idolatry. Paul in his frustration is asking the Galatians why they would want to go from one slavery to another.

The question must be asked, is the Apostle finding fault with them because they were observing the Holy Days of the Bible, or was he finding fault in how they were observing them?

We understand clearly that the Galatians were merging Judaism with Christianity-merging the Sinai Covenant with Abraham’s Covenant, (keeping Hagar in the house with Sarah -Gal.4:21-31) so perhaps they were beginning to observe these appointed times in a Jewish way. Consider the Passover for example, the Jews kept the Passover by slaughtering a lamb and eating it with bitter herbs to commemorate the death angel sparing their firstborn in Egypt. In Christianity, Christ is our Passover Lamb who takes away our sins. The Jews were commanded to eat the seder meal but Jesus introduced unleavened bread as His Body and wine as His blood of a new covenant and said, "do this in remembrance of Me." To a Jew the Feast of Unleavened Bread commemorates that God brought them out of Egypt so quickly that their bread didn’t have time to rise, but to a Christian this Festival is a celebration of the saving work of the cross the day before on Passover when Christ’s sacrifice made us unleavened before God. (leavening being recognized as a type for sin) The early Christians recognized and celebrated the fact that the way Israel observed the Festivals of God had now been fulfilled in Christ. The true meanings of the shadows past were made manifest in Christ.

Sometimes just when we think we’ve solved the problem we find they we’ve only created another one. Paul wrote the Galatians to "become as I am." Concerning the Holy Days Festivals, Paul marked his journeys in the book of Acts and 1 Corinthians around them, notice -"When they asked him (Paul) to stay a longer time with them, he did not consent, but took leave of them saying, ‘I must by all means keep this coming feast in Jerusalem; but I will return again to you, God willing.’ And he sailed from Ephesus." (Acts 18:20-21 NKJV) Notice that Paul is traveling to Jerusalem to "keep" the feast. Notice again, -"We sailed from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at Troas." (Acts 20:6) "For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so that he would not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hurrying to be in Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost." (Acts 20:16)

In his first letter to the Corinthians, he wrote, -"But I will come to you after I go through Macedonia, for I am going through Macedonia; and perhaps I will stay with you, or even spend the winter, so that you may send me on my way whenever I may go. For I do not wish to see you now just in passing; for I hope to remain with you for some time, if the Lord permits. But I will remain in Ephesus until Pentecost." (1 Cor. 16:5-8)

In 1 Corinthians 7:19 we see that Paul taught the observance of the Commandments to the Gentile converts, -"Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is the keeping of the Commandments of God." And Paul instructed the Gentiles how to observe the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, -"Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." (I Corinthians 5:7-8)

In 1 Corinthians 11 Paul chastens the brethren for how they were observing the Passover and gives them detailed instructions on how to properly observe it. In light of this understanding, I think that we must consider that Paul was not concerned that the Galatians were observing the Holy Days but in how they were observing them. The fact that Paul made references to Holy Day Festivals so casually to the Gentiles must mean that they were very familiar with them and likely observing them with Christian meanings.

What Catholic or Protestant Minister today would tell a Church that he would visit them after Ramadan, an Islamic observance? He would more likely say, "I’ll come to you after Thanksgiving," a holiday well known to American Christians.

So when Paul told the Galatians to "become as I am, for I also have become as you are," he was saying that as they had left their former life in pagan idolatry to be joined to Abraham’s Covenant through Christ, he too had left his former life in Judaism and Sinai Covenant to be joined to Abraham’s Covenant of Promise through Christ. Notice Philippians 3:5-7, Paul was "circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the Church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless. But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ." In verses 2 and 3 of this Chapter he refers to Judaizers as "dogs," "evil workers" and "the false circumcision." He goes on to tell the Philippians that in Christ they were the "true circumcision."

Now notice this frightening rebuke Paul delivered to those who were beginning to practice Christianity according to the flesh, the Sinai Covenant and Judaism, -"Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the WHOLE Law. You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace." (Gal. 5:2-4) We have already seen that Paul kept and taught God’s Commandments and Holy Day Festivals, so we must understand that there is a distinction between the Laws in Abraham’s Covenant and the "whole" Law in the Sinai Covenant which contained hundreds of Laws which were added due to transgressions. (Gal. 3:19)

When making a case for abandoning the Sinai Covenant and its Laws in order to receive Abraham’s Covenant of Promise, which is the New Covenant Christians enter into, the writer of Hebrews wrote, -"But now He (Christ) has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the Mediator of a better Covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. . .Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, when I will effect a New Covenant with the House of Israel and with the House of Judah; not like the Covenant which I made with their fathers. . .For this is the Covenant that I will make with the House of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put My Laws into their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. . .And I will remember their sins no more. When He said, ‘A New Covenant’ He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear." (Heb. 8:6-13)

In the New Covenant sins are remembered no more, but in the Sinai Covenant there are sacrifices which serve to remind the people of their sins, -"But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins." (Hebrews 10:3-4)

To harmonize these Scriptures we must see that there is a difference of Law in the two Covenants. The "better" or "new" Covenant contains Laws (though not for salvation or for righteousness) but certainly not the "whole Laws" of Moses which would sever a believer from Christ.

Genesis 26:5 says that God made a Covenant with Abraham "because Abraham obeyed Me and kept My charge, My Commandments, My Statutes and My Laws." I believe these to be the Ten Commandments, the Holy Days Festivals (since the early Church kept them) and the food Laws of Leviticus 11 which is confirmed by Peter’s vision when he refused to eat unclean foods even though he recognized the voice of the Lord commanding him to do so. Peter didn’t know what the vision meant at the time, but he understood clearly it was not a change of food Laws. Some may quickly point to Paul’s instruction to Timothy when he said, -"For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified (set apart) by means of the Word of God and prayer." (1 Tim.4:4-5) Notice what this is not saying. It is not saying you are free to eat anything as long as you give thanks and pray over it. Paul is saying that nothing is to be refused that has been "sanctified" by the Word of God. To be sanctified is to have been "set apart" by the Word of God. The only place in God’s Word where particular foods are set apart as clean and unclean is Leviticus 11. Even Noah knew there were clean and unclean animals because God instructed him to take seven pairs of clean animals and only one pair of unclean animals onto the ark. This is also why Peter refused to eat the unclean animals he saw in his vision, saying, -"By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean." (Acts 10:14)

One clue to the meaning of Galatians 4:8-12 is that the Galatians had turned to "elemental" things.

Elemental or elementary means beginning or basis understanding of things. Jesus had plainly told Nicodemis, a son of Abraham that he could not even see the Kingdom of God unless he be born again of the Spirit. This man was born of Abraham according to the flesh, but that was not enough to make him a true son and heir of the Kingdom. Consider that his fleshly birth as being an "elementary" thing, a beginning, but a Spiritual birth in Christ as needed for maturity and perfection. In their relationship with God, the Israelites had begun in the flesh, but Gentiles having never been heirs according to the flesh, actually began their relationship with God in the Spirit, -"Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?" (Gal. 3:3) In beginning to practice a Jewish brand of Christianity Paul was saying they were turning to elementary things and seeking to be perfected by the flesh. Paul clearly equates the Sinai Covenant and its sons as being flesh, -"And you brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise (Abraham’s Covenant of Promise). But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit." (Gal. 4:28-29)

We see this same "elementary"terminology used in the letter to the Hebrews in Chapter 6. The epistle to the Hebrews was written to Jews who had become Christians but were suffering persecution from their kinsmen.

Notice this from the heading of Hebrews in my Zondervan NASV Bible, -"The first-century church underwent much persecution, (mostly Jewish) and this letter was written in that setting. The persecution had not yet resulted in martyrdom, but it was severe. The intended readers seem to have been Jewish Christians who were thinking of abandoning their faith and of lapsing back into Judaism. So the author exhorts them to hold fast to their confession of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord."

As a result, some were leaving their maturity in Christ and returning to "elementary" teachings. They were compromising the pillars of the Christian faith by attempting to merely add Jesus as Messiah to the tenets of Judaism. From Chapter 1 through Chapter 13 the Apostle reveals Christ in everything that Israel had been taught. This was necessary because the Hebrew converts had begun to look back to Abraham, Moses and the Prophets, to the elementary or beginning things, rather than fixing their eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of Salvation.

The writer reminded these wavering brethren that though God had spoken to them long ago through the "fathers" and the "prophets"-in these "last days he has spoken to us in His Son." (Heb.1:1-2) He reminded them that Jesus was the Creator who had made the world and that He was superior to angels. In Chapter 2 the writer warned that God had testified through signs, wonders and miracles that Jesus was the Son of God and asked, -"how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?" (2:3) In Chapter 3 he stresses that Jesus is greater than Moses, -"For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house." (vs 3) Chapter 4 reveals that the "rest" that was promised to Abraham and his descendants was not achieved under the Sinai Covenant, and that the true rest did not lie across the Jordan but in the heavenly, -"For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that." (vs 8)

Chapters 5-8 reveal that Jesus is the Apostle and High Priest of Abraham’s Covenant of Promise-that the Priesthood of Melchizedek precedes and is greater than that of Aaron and Levi-that as High Priest, Jesus enters the heavenly tabernacle to intercede for us rather than into a mere copy and shadow in Jerusalem as Aaron did-that He is the Mediator of a New Covenant and that the Sinai Covenant is obsolete and ready to disappear. Chapter 10 says that Christians enter through the veil of the heavenly holy of holies by the blood of Jesus. Chapter 11 reminds the Hebrews of the great cloud of witnesses, including Abraham, Moses and the Prophets, all lived by faith without receiving the true promises of Abraham’s Covenant - that these great witnesses were strangers on the earth and were looking for a heavenly country and a city whose architect and builder is God. Chapter 12 warns the brethren of the consequences of coming up short of the grace of God - and that they have not come to Sinai as those formerly, but have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God. Chapter 13 has a exhortation to remember those who brought them the gospel of grace and turn back to imitating their faith.

To those wavering Hebrew Christians the case is made that in Christ there is superior revelation, superiority over angels, superiority over Moses, superiority over Aaronic Priests, superior sacrifice, superior Covenant ratified by Christ and then a plea to not turn back to "elementary" (beginning things) teachings about Christ but press on in persevering faith in Christ as all and in all.

Let us take into account that "elementary" things and teachings and even "shadows" are not bad, they just cannot make us perfect or take us into maturity in Christ.

The Passover lamb in Egypt could not take away sins but could only point to a future Lamb from God who had the power to. The "shadows" that God instructed Moses to build were "elementary" (beginning) things which pointed to the heavenly realities, -"Now if He (Jesus as High Priest) were on earth, He would not be a Priest at all, since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law; who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things." (Heb. 8:4-5) "For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near." (Heb.10:1) These sacrificial offerings had no power to wash away sins but could only serve as a reminder that a worthy sacrifice was needed.

* With all these things in mind let us now look at Hebrews Chapters 5 and 6. After explaining the superiority which is in Christ in every way, and that everything past is "elementary" and "shadows" of more heavenly realities, let us see the Apostle’s assessment of his Hebrew brethren, -"Concerning Him (Jesus as Melchizedek and High Priest) we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food." (5:11-12) These brethren were looking back and focusing on the shadows rather than remembering what the Apostles had taught them. They had forgotten the spiritual meaning of those types and shadows in the light of Christ. They had gone from college, spiritually, back to elementary school.

Now notice Chapter 6:1-2, -"Therefore, leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment." All of these tenets of the Christian faith are good and necessary, but they are only the elementary, or beginnings of the faith and there is a need to press on to our maturity in Christ, -"Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature, a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." (1 Cor. 2:6-8)

We have already seen that Paul had taught the Holy Days to the Gentiles and was observing them himself by his own admission. Since the Galatian heresy was birthed by Judaizers insisting that the brethren turn back to observing Christianity according to elementary teachings, it is reasonable to conclude that they were making the same error that their Hebrew brethren were. The Judaizers still taught the elementary shadows of worship at the temple in Jerusalem, animal sacrifices, the whole Law of Moses administered by the Aaronic and Levitical Priesthoods, the tenets of the Sinai Covenant, and in observing the annual Festivals of God in the place and the way that Moses had instructed.

Since the Scriptures reveal that the Apostle Paul kept and taught the Ten Commandments and annual Festivals of God, in order to harmonize the Word of God we must conclude that the Galatian Church had begun to keep these days, months and years according to the elementary teachings as first delivered to Moses and not according to their heavenly realities in Christ Jesus. Here is the spiritual meaning of the annual Holy Day Festivals of the Lord.

PASSOVER: Christ is our Passover Lamb whose shed Blood saves us from eternal death. Jesus was crucified on this day to fulfill the meaning of it. It is an annual memorial of the Lord’s death. It occurs in the Spring at the time of the Barley harvest on the 14th day of the first month of the Hebrew calendar. This harvest represents a harvest of souls, the first-fruits, saints of God, bride of Christ, who will rise in glory at His coming.

FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD: This seven day festival follows the Passover, beginning on the 15th day of the first Hebrew month. It also occurs at the Barley harvest. Jesus was the wave shelf of the Barley and when accepted the rest of the harvest could be reaped. This is a seven day (number of perfection) celebration of the glorious truth that we have been made "unleavened"-without sin by Jesus, our Passover Lamb.

PENTECOST: This occurs in the summer and is connected with the Wheat harvest. Fifty days is counted from the weekly Sabbath during Unleavened bread to arrive at the date, therefore Pentecost is always on a Sunday. This is the day that the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples and the Church of Jesus Christ began. It also represents the future harvest of Israel for their salvation.

TRUMPETS: This occurs on the 1st day of the seventh Hebrew month and represents the return of Christ in all of His glory. It is the time of the first resurrection and is associated with the harvest of the Vine and Produce.

DAY OF ATONEMENT: This occurs on the 10th day of the seventh month and points to the time when Satan and his demons will be put away and the world will become at-one-ment with God. It also points to the time when the resurrected saints will be presented to the Father.

FEAST OF TABERNACLES: This is a seven day Festival that begins on the 15th day of the seventh Hebrew month. It is a time of rejoicing because it pictures the Kingdom of God being established upon the earth and the knowledge of God filling the earth. It is a time when the nations will war no more and there will be peace at last. Jesus and His saints will rule for a thousand years. It is a harvest of souls who will have survived the Great Tribulation.

LAST GREAT DAY: This is sometimes called the eighth day of Tabernacles since it follows immediately. But it has its own meaning. It is the time of the second resurrection and the Great White Throne Judgment of God. It is also a harvest of souls, as billions who are resurrected will have the books of the Bible opened to their understanding and they will have an opportunity to have salvation and fellowship with God. Following this time the present earth and heavens will perish and give way to new heavens and a new earth. It is the time when the New Jerusalem will descend and God the Father will descend on His throne.

 

An Inflamed Appendix Healed

On August 17th; 2002, we received word that a member of our church was at the hospital with their 18 year old daughter. She was experiencing excruciating pain in her lower abdomen which the physicians believed to be an inflamed appendix.To make matters worse, she was 7 months pregnant. To make matters much worse, this young woman's parents had been saved only three years earlier and she had rebelled and left home. She had told me and her parents that she wanted to "serve the devil." She had been taking illegal drugs, practicing immorality and had set her course to self-destruction. In all of this she knew that we loved her and were continually in spiritual warfare for her, offering prayers of intercession daily.

After Sabbath services, several members of the church and I went to the hospital. In the room, we stood around her bed as she suffered. Her mother turned to me and said,- "We can pray for her." I replied, "Only if she wants prayer." The mother then asked her daughter,- "Do you want us to pray for you?" The girl indifferently replied,-"If you want to."

I knew that Satan had a stranglehold on this girl. And I also knew that she had invited the powers of darkness into her life,- she must now invite the power of God into her life by requesting a prayer for healing. I said to her,- "We already pray for you everyday. But if you want prayer for anointing you must ask for it." She stubbornly refused, rejecting God's involvement.

Soon afterward a surgeon and a nurse entered the room and asked that we wait in the hallway for a few minutes. The surgeon told this young woman that there was a small chance that she may die during surgery, and a 15% chance that the baby would not survive.

The news devastated the family. While they tried to comfort her the rest of us went to the waiting room. Minutes later her father came and said that she was asking for me. I went, hoping she would open her heart to receive a Word from the Lord. I stood at her bedside waiting for the invitation to ask for God's involvement.

She had great difficulty, truly a struggle was taking place within her. Part of her desperately wanted to ask for prayer, but the spiritual powers of darkness were doing their best to stop her. Her face began to distort as she began to sob, but finally said,- "Brother Larry would you please pray for me?"

As I laid hands upon her head I could feel the demons shudder as the power of God surged like electricity. I knew that God had healed her of an inflamed appendix, but more importantly had implanted Words into her being that would stay, and continually trouble the devil's plan. She also knew that she had been healed but did not say so at the time because she still did not want to totally change her lifestyle. She wanted only enough God to get out of this situation. This was an important moment. One who sows much reaps much and one who sows little reaps little. It seemed that she wanted to sow, but only a little, which meant that God would deliver accordingly.

The door opened and another physician entered. He said the first surgeon was wrong in saying that she and her baby may die. He said,- "The worst thing that could happen is that you may give birth prematurely, but the baby should be fine." He then noticed that she was no longer vomiting, in pain or running a fever. He checked the readings on her monitor and saw they were normal. He said,- "Though the ultra-sound showed an inflamed appendix, I am tempted to wait until morning since everything seems normal now."

He asked me to step out of the room while he examined her again to determine whether to cancel the surgery or not. Moments later he quickly exited the room and said, "It is definitely appendicitis, we must get her in surgery!"

Seeing this, I knew that there were still demonic strongholds exercising their powers, so I went back to the waiting room and told the brethren there to begin praying fervently. I knew that she had been healed, but I also knew that she was holding back in professing it, and giving God the glory for it.

There in that public waiting room members of the Crusade Church of God in Russellville, Arkansas got on their knees and began offering powerful prayers to the Living God. We prayed for well over an hour. During this time I could hear the waiting room door open and close from time to time, but we did not care for we were lost in prayer.

The physicians performed the surgery and removed a perfectly healthy appendix. The inflamation they had seen on the ultra-sound was no longer there, which of course was "impossible."

But by asking for prayer, this girl had dared the impossible and found that with God nothing is impossible. She later admitted that she knew immediately that she had been healed. Had she given God the glory at first she would not have experienced this unneeded surgery. I am convinced that the physician would have cancelled it. In prayers offered in faith, the brethren also dared the impossible and prevailed.

God has promised that those who believe would be clothed with power from Heaven. That signs and wonders would follow them as they walk their walk of faith.

We must only believe to receive, and act to see the fact. God's promises are never "yes", "no" and "maybe," but only "yes." Notice,- "But as God is faithful, our word to you is not yes and no, for the Son of God, Christ Jesus, who was preached among you by us. . .was not yes and no, but is yes in Him. For as many as may be the promises of God, in Him they are YES." (2 Corinthians 1:18-20)

 

Freed From Sin

"For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous." Romans 5:19

"Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with. . .for he who has died is freed from sin." Romans 5:6-7

A man is not a sinner because he sins, but sins because he is a sinner. David said that he was conceived in sin - meaning that he had inherited the nature of Adam who was the first sinner. Through Adam’s disobedience we all inherited sin and death, but through the obedience of Christ, the last Adam, we inherit His righteousness and life. We are not sinners because of what we have done, but because of what Adam did. Likewise, Christians are not righteous because of what they have done, but because of what Jesus did.

It is not only what we have done that is wrong, but our very nature in the flesh is wrong and cannot please God. This is why the flesh must be crucified with Christ and we must be made a new creation in Him. Since Adam’s nature is sinful we must be born of the divine nature of God through the Spirit of God, -"He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust." (2 Pet.1)

When witnessing we must always point to the problem of man’s sin nature rather than merely focusing on bringing to light the personal and individual sins which have been committed. A sinner can easily be deceived into believing that they are a good person who has done some bad things. And they can quickly conclude that if they simply work a little harder at being good they will be fine. We must always point out that God must deal with more than past sins committed, but also with the very source of sin which is the sin nature of Adam.

The Bible plainly says that there are none good, not even one. In Adam we are all sinners, but in Christ we are made righteous and holy. This is why there is no other Way but Christ for salvation. One may think that kind, benevolent and loving people who do not confess Christ can be saved, but there is no salvation outside of Christ. We inherit sin and death from Adam and inherit reconciliation, righteousness and life in Christ Jesus.

You and I exist because of Adam. If Adam had died before he produced offspring then we would have died with him because in the flesh, we are the fruits of his loins. In the flesh we are all associated with Adam, but in the Spirit we are identified with Christ.

As we see in our text, the old self which is from Adam must be crucified in order to deliver us from his sin nature. In Hebrews 7 Paul makes a case that the priesthood of Melchezedek is eternal and better than Aaron, the Levite’s priesthood which was temporary. To prove his point, the Apostle argues that when Abraham gave tithes to Melchezedek Levi was offering tithes too though he was still in his grandfather’s loins. So, because Abraham was the head of the family, what he did was also credited to Levi even before he was born.

Likewise, "in Christ" what the Lord has done is credited to us who have been born in Him, and even now exist in Him. By His perfect obedience we were made righteous. Our sins were paid by His Blood. And with Him we receive the divine nature, and the old self was crucified with Him.

 

Who Will Make Room?

I felt the Presence of God very heavily during praise and worship services. As we were singing, the Presence of God was ministering to me. The Lord spoke to me, saying - "I look down to see whom I may fill with My spirit. Who will I pour My spirit upon? Who will make room?" The Lord went on to let me know that He is not hidden, but to seek and we will find. The Lord actually did it in a humorous way by referring to the game of Hide and Seek - that we are not playing Hide and Seek.

The Lord definitely wants us to do more seeking. The Lord does not hide from His children. If there is any hiding it is we who are doing it. the Lord wanted me to know that He wants to fill us completely with His spirit and that we should not hide from Him. The Lord wants to be all and in all.

"Life is wasted if we do not grasp the glory of the cross, cherish it for the treasure that it is, and cleave to it as the highest price of every pleasure and the deepest comfort in every pain. What was once foolishness to us—a crucified God—must become our wisdom and our power and our only boast in this world." –John Piper

 

The Eagle Christian

How can anyone not believe in a creator, of all that be, in the heavens and in the earth? With all the evidence and scientific proof, common sense says, they choose to not believe. As one observes nature with its grandeur and beauty, it declares that a hand of love created this. The Bible in Ps. 19-1 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows forth the work of His hands".

If you listen quietly, you can hear the earth's melody; the mountains echoing their voice, the waterfall singing its song, the wind through the trees whispering their tune. You can hear the thunder clapping and rumbling, and see the clouds rolling and lightening flashing. The animals each have their own language, and the fowl all communicating in their manner different from all other species. The smaller birds of the air with their beauty in glorious colors have such sweet melodies; they must be giving praise to the one who created and cares for them. The valleys and the fields are not left out with their plant life; the flowers so intricately made with magnificent beauty and fragrance, to each its own glory.

Oh, how great a designer there had to be to bring forth all this magnificent beauty and music! It can be no other than GOD, who is far above what anything created can imagine. Where is He? This space we dwell in is not large enough for His dwelling place, so look up, up to the heavenlies. What do you see? More grandeur, more majestic beauty in the sky with the sun by day, the moon and stars by night, which the natural eye can see; but, oh, with the telescope how much more majesty can be observed! No, all this did not just happen with a bang. It came about with a thunderous roar, the VOICE of our loving GOD who spoke and said "LET THERE BE!" And it was, and is, and will be, until He returns to take His children home. We who believe in Him, trust Him, and love Him with all our heart, all our soul, and all our might. We will see all the glory and breath taking beauty of our home in heaven, which no words can describe. Now why do you suppose God went to all this extreme to create such beauty and melodious sound with such majestic surroundings? The mankind which He created in His likeness and image was for His good pleasure, and He wanted to share with man all that He is and has. God wants a family to shower his love on.

Another amazing thing is God created the animal and fowl with instinct to guide it, which corresponds with the life of man who is led by spirit. They can be taught many things by man, but not only does the animal and fowl learn from man, man can also learn many things by observing their life. Take the eagle for example, what can we learn from observing it? Did you know the eagle is mentioned in the Bible 32 times? The ways of a man being compared to the ways of an eagle and even God compares Himself to an eagle. The eagle has God given virtues such as strength, power, majesty, boldness, dependability, combined with tenderness and faithfulness; all virtues of a Christian. There are two types of eagles in the Bible lands: The golden eagle likens us to partakers of God's divine nature while the imperial eagle speaks of kings. An eagle is king of the sky, afraid of neither man, beast or elements. By the blood of Jesus we have been made kings and priests unto God. The baby eagle has to learn who he is and how to fly. We too have to learn who we are and learn how to soar above the storms of life. We both must learn we have been given strength and power. In the Bible it says in Is. 40:28-31,–"they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint".

The word 'wait' in Hebrew is 'Qavah' which translated means to bind together as by twisting; used in a sense of plaiting together of cord to produce a rope. As we entwine our spirits with the Father God, the two are interlocked together. Storms of life must come, but we too can learn to fearlessly soar above the turbulence of the storm. We can learn how to let the air currents of the Holy Spirit bear us up above the turmoil and confusion with the God given peace that passes all understanding. Our wings are Faith, Prayer, and Praise. We have been given the power and authority to overcome in the name of JESUS.

Eagles are birds of light; They hunt and fly in the day not night. Owls are of the dark as people of the world are of darkness. The eagle has nothing at all to do with the owl, in fact they shun all fowl of the night. Smaller birds like to torment and harass the eagle; the eagle responds to this not by defensive attacks but only by flying higher; by rising above their tormentors. Pilots have seen the eagle as much as 25,000 feet, (4-5 miles) above the earth and as far as 900 mile from any land. Their flying speed has been registered at 100 mph, and their diving speed at 200 mph. They have two sets of eyelids one for flight and one for earth. The eagle can focus; (single mindedness of purpose) nothing can distract him when he focuses on his prey, does not deviate from his target.

Man also has double vision in a sense; our earthly vision and spiritual vision. Our focus is to be centered on Christ, to fulfill God's purpose, and to be in constant fellowship with Him by praying without ceasing and abiding in His Word. James 1:5-8, -"the double minded man is unstable in all his ways". The eagle has patience; will sit on the nest days without eating until their mate returns with food, or will sit hours waiting on their prey. Heb.5:36 " For patience is necessary so that after you have done the will of God you might receive the promise".

The eagle has no problem with gender; how about that, they know if they are male or female, and they mate for life. The male has his role and the female has hers. They hunt together, they play together and work together.Their courtship is throughout their life. It has been observed that, while the female sits on the nest, her mate brings a green sprig of a plant or flower daily, and preens (grooms) her feathers. They cavort in the air by clinging together with their talons, and doing somersaults. He helps her with the eaglets; they both care for their young, and protect very fiercely their young and each other. God's Word says in Eph 5:25-28 " Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her - -"

The eagle's nest, their home, is well built; 4' x 9', can weigh as much as a ton, being built with very large sticks, brush, twigs, roots, grass, leaves, and lined with soft down grass, moss, wool, animal fur, and feathers. They build their nest in high places in the mountain peaks on rocky ledges or cliffs. Deut.32:11-13 "As an eagle stirs up her nest, flutters over her young, spreads abroad her wings, taketh them, and bears them on her wings, so the Lord alone did lead him (Jacob-Israel) and there was no strange god with him. He made him ride on the high places of the earth that he might eat the increase of the field; and He made him suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock." We as Christians are called to dwell high above the earth, not be earth bound, seated in the heavenly in Christ Jesus.

Another analogy of the eagle and man is when we are down and out, feeling sorry for our self, or in a state of depression. If the eagle has lost his mate, or is taken into captivity, he seemingly loses hope, is down in the dumps, then he becomes a 'dirty bird'; his appearance is that of a bad hair day, and he even eats garbage rather than his usual delicacy of fresh meat. Can anyone relate to this behavior?

When he starts getting older his beak calcifies, his talons get blunt, his movements in flight are slower, he has another bad hair day, his feathers get matted together. Well, what does he do then? He heads for the high country! Close to the sun and lands on a rock; we run to The Son, who is The Rock. The eagle slowly beats his beak against the rocks until all calcification is gone. He hones his talons on the rocks until they are razor sharp. He plucks his wing feathers, then finds a refreshing mountain stream to wash in the icy cold water to get rid of the lice and parasites; the old feathers are washed away, clean and naked stands before the sun he becomes fresh and alive; as we get clean by the washing of The Word, and the honing of The Rock to grind away all the false ideas and the ways of the world. Ps. 103:5 "He satisfies your years with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's".

There are various species of eagles as various nationalities of people.The Harpy eagle is a very powerful eagle, weighing over 20 pounds, stands 3 ft. in height with a wing span of 7 ft.. Harpy in Hebrew means, winged wolf. He is bold and fearless, and kills animals 3 x his size and weight.

The Bible says in 2 Tim.1:7 "God has not given us a spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind". This eagle never gives up a battle, he has great perseverance. In building his nest in the face of storms, fire, blizzards,or earthquakes, no matter how many times his nest is destroyed he rebuilds. He never abandons his nest, that is his home. Satan is out to destroy, steal, and kill mankind, doing anything to keep him from succeeding or fulfilling his purpose in life; but Rev.3:12 says, " to him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God". As the eagle has built his house on a rock so should we build on The Rock, Jesus Christ. Luke 6:47-48: states, "Whosoever comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you unto whom he is like: he is like a man who built a house and dug deep and laid the foundation on rock, and when the flood arose the river beat vehemently upon that house and could not shake it, for it was founded upon rock".

In Job 39: 30 it states," the young eaglet sucks up blood, and wherever the slain are, there she is". As blood gives and sustains the life of the eaglet, so the blood of Jesus, who was slain for us, gives us life and sustains us. We have been redeemed by His precious blood. Our God created us in His likeness and image.

As Christians (His children) we have been given His nature and character, with a new heart and desire to please Him. He has given us authority and power to overcome, to tread upon serpents and scorpions. Christ has defeated our enemy, Satan, and won the victory for us to walk in. We have been given eternal life. So what hinders us from soaring above all storms of life to new heights in the Holy Spirit, on wings of faith, prayer and praise. Let us go forth as Eagle Christians and bring Glory and Honor to our God, our Father, and our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Story Behind "It is Well with My Soul"

Horatio G. Spafford was a successful lawyer and businessman in Chicago with a lovely family - a wife, Anna, and five children. However, they were not strangers to tears and tragedy. Their young son died with pneumonia in 1871, and in that same year, much of their business was lost in the great Chicago fire. Yet, God in His mercy and kindness allowed the business to flourish once more.

On Nov. 21, 1873, the French ocean liner, Ville du Havre was crossing the Atlantic from the U.S. to Europe with 313 passengers on board. Among the passengers were Mrs. Spafford and their four daughters. Although Mr. Spafford had planned to go with his family, he found it necessary to stay in Chicago to help solve an unexpected business problem. He told his wife he would join her and their children in Europe a few days later. His plan was to take another ship.

About four days into the crossing of the Atlantic, the Ville du Harve collided with a powerful, iron-hulled Scottish ship, the Loch Earn. Suddenly, all of those on board were in grave danger. Anna hurriedly brought her four children to the deck. She knelt there with Annie, Margaret Lee, Bessie and Tanetta and prayed that God would spare them if that could be His will, or to make them willing to endure whatever awaited them. Within approximately 12 minutes, the Ville du Harve slipped beneath the dark waters of the Atlantic, carrying with it 226 of the passengers including the four Spafford children.

A sailor, rowing a small boat over the spot where the ship went down, spotted a woman floating on a piece of the wreckage. It was Anna, still alive. He pulled her into the boat and they were picked up by another large vessel which, nine days later, landed them in Cardiff, Wales. From there she wired her husband a message which began, "Saved alone, what shall I do?" Mr. Spafford later framed the telegram and placed it in his office.

Another of the ship’s survivors, Pastor Weiss, later recalled Anna saying, "God gave me four daughters. Now they have been taken from me. Someday I will understand why."

Mr. Spafford booked passage on the next available ship and left to join his grieving wife. According to Bertha Spafford Vester, a daughter born after the tragedy, Spafford wrote "It Is Well With My Soul" while on this journey.

With the ship about four days out, the captain called Spafford to his cabin and told him they were over the place where his children perished. Mr Spafford thanked the Captain and made his way up to the deck. Through the darkness watching as the sea billows rolled, this truth comforted him, "It is well with my soul." He put it to pen initially as a poem, but it later became one of America’s most beloved hymns.

"When peace like a river attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll,

Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,

It is well, it is well with my soul.

Chorus:

It is well with my soul,

It is well, it is well with my soul"

Anna gave birth to three more children, one of which died at age four with dreaded pneumonia. In August 1881, the Spaffords moved to Jerusalem. Mr. Spafford died and is buried in that city.

Which Group Will You Join?

I want to address a few things that I’ve noticed or have heard people say when we’re discussing Christianity. Christianity is simply God’s Way of living our lives. Jesus referred to Himself as "the Way."

Sometimes when I point out that something that they’re doing is a sin, I often get, "Well, God doesn’t really care about those little things because He loves us and just wants us to love Him." They seem to believe that they can continue to disobey God and be accepted by Him anyway. The Point is not whether God will "love" them, but will He "accept" them if they choose to continue to disobey Him.

Since this is merely human thinking and is not supported by the teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, it has concerned me enough that I was moved to write this article. To make my point I will ask these questions. "If someone commits murder are they in danger of Hell?" "If someone commits adultery are they in danger of the Judgment?" Many of you would answer "yes, unless they repented." But many of you wouldn’t feel the same way about someone who broke the fifth Commandment and did not honor and obey their parents. We must be careful to not put certain sins as very evil while other sins are not so bad. All sin if done on purpose is deadly. Paul wrote, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23 My point is to show by the Bible that this thinking I’ve encountered is very wrong and dangerous to your soul.

Hebrew Chapter 10, Verses 26-28 is both enlightening and frightening. It addresses this false thinking about God’s attitude about those who practice sin. "For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses."

What is God trying to tell us in these verses? Well, we see that those who learn the truth about their sins and then continue to practice them will suffer a judgment of fire and be consumed! We also see that God sees people who continue practicing sin as "adversaries." An adversary is an enemy!

Before you accuse me of being self-righteous, let me be the first to admit that I struggle with sin myself and am far from perfect in my own conduct. Like Paul said of himself in Romans 7, though I agree with God and want to please Him, I sometimes find myself doing the very things that I hate and that God hates. But I do hate it, and I do not try to do those things-I am just weak sometimes. But when I fail I make it a point to ask God’s forgiveness and also for the strength to be stronger the next time I’m tempted. The point is, I do try to obey God and desire to please Him. I love Him and I try to show it by trying to trust and obey Him the best as I can. You know, you really don’t love the Lord if you don’t try to keep His Commandments. In John 14:15, Jesus said, "If you love Me you will keep My Commandments."

The Apostle John said that there are two types of sin, one that leads to death and one that does not lead to death. (1 John 5:16-17) Sin means "to miss the mark." So, if you sin you are missing the mark. The important thing to ask yourself is, are you trying to hit the mark or trying to miss the mark. Those who miss the mark while they are trying to hit the mark are forgiven. But those who miss the mark because they are not even trying to hit the mark will not be forgiven, and John says to not even pray that God would have mercy on those people. The way of regularly sinning on purpose leads to death.

Since I am a Christian who has committed my life to Christ, I am also an ambassador for Him which makes it my job to point these truths out and appeal for those of you who practice sin to repent from the way that leads to death. "Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God." 2 Corinthians 5:20)

God loves you and Jesus gave His life to wash away your sins. He wants to give you life, but you must first repent from practicing sin. "But by His Word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the Day of Judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:7-9

In the end, when it’s all said and done, there will be only two groups of people. There will be a very large group which will have rejected or neglected the great salvation that the Lord gave His life to give them, and there will be a very small number who will have received that salvation with joy and will have overcome the world and it’s defilements. Each person in the saved group will receive eternal life in Paradise, but each person in the lost group will be cast into the Lake of Fire. It’s your choice. Which group will you join?

"Forgive me, Lord! Deliver me from the spirit of fear and pride. I'm desperate for You...I am desperate for Your Word!" Still praying, in mid-thought He began speaking. I paused in my prayer until I was sure it was Him and rushed over to get paper and a pencil.

This is what He said... "You see that I have freed you from sin released you from shame. Bid farewell to these prison walls, for it was for freedom that I set you free. You shall not be bound, you shall be free. You will tread in victory and shame will be that which is trampled upon. Fear will not find a place in you. Am I not your God? Do I not redeem? Do I not save? Walk with me. Know My hand is holding yours and I won't let go of you, My child. I've loved you from the beginning."

And at this point, He was silent. I knew in my spirit, however, that He wasn't finished and so I pursued it, pushing the paper aside and returning to my knees. I looked up at the meeting hall and He said, "These people." I said, "What about these people, Lord?" And He continued, "These people stir My soul. Their hearts turn towards Me and not away from Me like so many. I'm preparing a place and how glorious it will be! You will know Me as I am and you will be as you have been, with Me as at the beginning...My wrath was spent on My perfect Son, for He was slain and My love is for you and you alone, My precious redeemed who wear His blood according to My will."

Having heard this, I received it with such joy, Brethren. I praised Him so much for His lovingkindness to answer me so quickly and so perfectly. God is faithful to do His part when we pursue that which we've been given to do, the way we're called to serve. The body of Christ will function in perfect health when each one of us as members of that body seek to fulfill our individual purpose with compassion and love from a pure heart.

Vision during "Heaven Song" Praise and Prayer 11-4-2016

At the end of "Heaven Song" I saw the Army of the Lord charging down a hill into a valley plain. The Army had a red banner that looked like thin silk that hovered above the entire Army. As long as it was red we knew that the battle raged on. The banner hovered low over us. It was love and a covering. It told us when to fight, and when the war was over. Then Jesus rode across the front line to face all of us and immediately line after line of soldiers fell to kneel before Him-it looked like a wave. The last enemy was defeated and the banner over us which had been colored red by His Blood and the blood of the martyrs turned white. The red melted away from the front to the back and we knew then that our war was over. Joy and praise was tangible in the air, we were so excited. I felt palpable joy but was given the impression that the joy on that Day is unique-not like anything we can feel as long as there is war.

Revelation 15:2 -Prophetic Dream

It was one of those moments when you can’t stay awake. When the dream started I was in a dark forest. I could only see shadows for the most part. I was riding a horse and there were many horses among me with people on them. I was so in-sync with my horse that it didn’t feel that I was on one. The horses were all galloping at full speed and were in formation-a battle formation. I could hear the sound of many hooves crushing to the ground as they rushed forward. My heart was racing at the time.

I jumped scenes and was standing on at the edge of a cliff, and as I looked down I saw a bluish fire just off the cliff. Fear struck my heart greatly as I felt the Lord tell me to move forward. I stood there in disbelief and fear but I still felt moved to step forward. I stepped forward, and stood on clear glass mingled with fire. I wondered about this dream for a couple of years before Michael Lasiter one day read in Revelation 15:2 during an outdoor Bible Study, -"And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those how had been victorious over the beast and his image and the number of his name, standing on a sea of glass, holding harps of God." As I listened, I said in my heart "that’s my dream."

The Burning Bush

During this particular time it was a beautiful clear night. Our cabins at Powder Fork were set up with two cabins combined together. My roommates were Jessica Ryan, Chelsie Ryan, Tammie Case and her children and Earlene Donelson.

Through the evening hours we were reading scriptures and discussing things about God, sometimes staying up past 3AM. On this particular night we decided to worship to the sound of a CD. A large tree was beside our cabin. While we were worshiping I saw in the spirit that the tree was engulfed with fire which was bluish in color. I could only imagine that it was what Moses saw when he encountered God’s Presence in the burning bush. It was so majestic that just the memory of it still brings joy to my heart.

 

The Power of the Indwelling

"Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" 1 Corinthians 3:16

"But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?" 1 Corinthians 6:17-19

The Corinthian Church was rich in the outward manifestation of the Spirit. Miracles were common in the Church, they prophesied and spoke in heavenly tongues. But they were lacking in spiritual maturity, -"And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly." (1 Cor.3:1-3) The Corinthian Church had many manifestations of the out-pouring but they were struggling in the flesh because they were neglecting the indwelling - they were not allowing God, the Head of the House to have His way in their lives.

We must conclude that there is a difference between receiving the out-pouring of the Spirit and the indwelling of the Spirit. Visual signs are primarily a result of the out-pouring, but real change in a person comes from giving way to the indwelling. It is the indwelling that we must submit to in order to grow to spiritual maturity - to the stature of Christ.

There are many in the ministry who are pre-occupied with the out-pouring because of the manifestation of miracles yet struggle in their flesh because they fail to yield to God as the Lord of their lives through the indwelling. Jesus spoke of this in Matthew Chapter 7 saying, -"Many will say to Me on that Day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’"

Let us understand that the Spirit is God - I believe the very essence of both the Father and the Son. The Spirit is not a thing or merely a power but is the personal manifestation of God. As our texts show, where the Spirit of God dwells, He dwells. In 2 Corinthians Paul revealed that the Lord is the Spirit, -"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." (2 Cor.3:17)

When we are born of the Spirit we become a living temple in which God Himself lives. Perhaps you were taught to pray to God as if He were far off somewhere, but in reality He is nearer than your next breath. You need not make a "long-distant" call because He is in the House. In Christ we receive the revelation that we have become His presence rather than a person seeking to enter into His presence. Since our body has become a holy temple in which God dwells, we are not to commit immorality which would work to defile the holy body. Paul’s answer to the problem of fleshly indulgence is to understand that we are God’s temple, have been purchased by the sacrifice of His Son, and do not belong to ourselves, -"You are not your own . . .for you have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body."

Objective is a statement that is completely unbiased. It is not influenced by a person’s previous experiences. It is verifiable by looking up facts. Subjective is a statement which is colored by personal experience and observation. It has a basis in reality but reflects a personal perspective. When we see Christ as Lord objectively - exalted to the Throne in heaven - then we experience the out-pouring power of the Spirit upon us. When we see Christ as Lord subjectively - as Ruler of our lives - then we experience the indwelling power of the Spirit within us.

When God awoke us to the reality that He exists and is real - calling us to receive salvation through His Son - we experienced the out-pouring of His Spirit upon us, washing away our sins and clothing us with His power.

But then came the reality that He has cleaned the house for the purpose of moving in. Through the out-pouring we do the mighty works of Jesus, and through the indwelling we are transformed into what He is. Let us take heed that we do not neglect the work of the indwelling for by the out-pouring alone no one will see God. It is only through the indwelling that we come to intimately know and actually become the presence of God, -"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit." (2 Cor.3:18)

 

Thought to Ponder

Truth is the only reality. Truth can be veiled, be labeled as lies, or be trampled under foot-but it is still the truth. And just as the Living Truth in Christ rose from the grave, truth, itself will arise from the darkness of deceit and illuminate the world. Careful that you are not among those who scurry into the comfort of shifting shadows in order to avoid the reality of the divine light in the fullness of truth.

 

Odds and Ends

Testimony: "Yes Child, of course I was with you"

The lord is so precious. He has been so kind by lifting me up when I struggle, and revealing Himself to me in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

One Friday night during praise and prayer service, I was with the Lord in my "secret place". It’s the place I like to go in my mind to praise God, meditate, and remind myself of His promises. This night I was thinking about God’s emotions toward us. (My view on this was that God was just sitting in heaven with a bag of popcorn watching over us and intervening in our lives when needed.) I started to think of the story of Lazarus, and how when Jesus heard that he was dead, he wept. Even though Jesus knew Lazarus would be resurrected, he felt the loss of a friend, and he felt compassion for the family.

That emotion was so great and He didn’t have to let Himself feel it, but He did. I was reminded of some of the testimonies where tears from above fell upon people as they worshiped or prayed. Big Daddy (Pastor Larry) has said that he’s seen Jesus walk up to us and embrace us with a hug. And I, myself have seen the Spirit of the Lord kiss a member tenderly on the forehead while she was singing. Praise Him!

So, with everything being brought to memory, I started to realize that God doesn’t just watch over us, He is ever with us. When we’re sad, He’s sad. And when we’re happy, He rejoices. This new realization had such an effect on me that I was still thinking about it the next day. I was looking back on one specific night that had happened just a couple weeks prior. I was deeply troubled and had come to the Church while no one was there. In my distress I fell on the floor weeping. I couldn’t get up, so I just laid there and cried.

I truly felt like I would see the Lord’s Presence that night, but I didn’t, and eventually I went home. But on Sabbath, because of this new understanding, I was drawn back to that night. I started to wonder if God was crying with me or if He was even there. At that moment, I was given an image. I was taken by the Spirit back to that night, and I could see myself on the floor with my back turned. And behind me was Jesus on His knees, broken. I heard, "Yes child, of course I was with you."

The Telescope

The Bible is like a telescope. If a man looks through his telescope he sees worlds beyond; but if he looks at his telescope, he does not see anything it. The Bible is a thing to be looked through to see that which is beyond; but most people only look at it and so they see only the dead letter.

ANXIETY

AMBASSADORS

Paul considered himself Christ's ambassador. What is an ambassador? He is an authorized representative of a sovereign. He speaks not in his own name but on behalf of the ruler whose deputy he is, and his whole duty and responsibility is to interpret that ruler's mind faithfully to those to whom he is sent.

Paul used this "ambassador" image twice -- both in connection with his evangelistic work. Pray for me, he wrote from prison, "that utterance may be given me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak" (Eph. 6:18-20). He wrote also that God "gave us the ministry of reconciliation...So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God" (2 Corinthians 5:18-20).

Paul called himself an ambassador because he knew that when he proclaimed the gospel facts and promises and urged sinners to receive the reconciliation effected at Calvary, he was declaring Christ's message to the world. The figure of ambassadorship highlights the authority Paul had, as representing his Lord, as long as he remained faithful to the terms of his commission and said neither less nor more than he had been given to say.

ASSURANCE

Regarding salvation and assurance, there are three groups of people: (1) those who are secure but not sure; (2) those who are "sure" but not secure; and (3) those who are secure and sure. Category one are conscientious believers in Christ who are saved but lack assurance. In category two are professing Christians who say, "Even though I'm living in sin, I'll make it. After all, 'once saved, always saved!'" The third group are born-again believers who enjoy a warm, secure relationship with Christ each day. The objective basis of our salvation is the finished work of God's Son on the cross. The subjective basis for our assurance is our believing the truth about Christ (I John 2:2,4; 2:15; 5:1), loving the brethren (I John 3:14, 18, 19, 4:7-8), and obeying Christ's commandments (I John 2:3-5)
