"And
the testimony is this, that God has
given us eternal life, and this life is
in His Son. He who has the Son has the
life; he who does not have the Son of
God does not have the life. These things
I have written to you who believe in the
name of the Son of God, so that you may
know that you have eternal life." 1 John
5:11-13
How precious it is to know that we have
a Heavenly Father who loves us with so
great a love that He gave the life of
His Son to save us. As a Pastor I have
seen how corrupt and selfish we humans
can be at times, so the love of God
truly amazes me. The Bible says that God
loved us while we were yet sinners, -"God
demonstrates His own love toward us, in
that while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us. Much more then, having now
been justified by His blood, we shall be
saved from the wrath of God through
Him." (Ro.5)
To be "justified" means that we have
been brought into such a righteous and
holy position that there is no record of
sins ever committed in the book of our
life. Through His shed blood we have a
perfect history and do not wear the
shackles of a pardoned offender. When we
come to Jesus all of our sins past,
present and future are cast into the Sea
of Forgetfulness.
The Bible says that Jesus became the
propitiation for our sins. Propitiation
means "wrath absorbing" or "wrath
satisfying." Jesus absorbed the wrath of
our sins for us which satisfied the
penalty’s demand. Our text reveals the
tenderness of the Father, in that He
wants us to know and be assured that we
have eternal life in His Son.
This passage also teaches us that the
life is in the Son and in those who
believe and trust in Him. He is the only
way to eternal life. His torn flesh is
the veil which all must past through to
enter into the Father’s Presence. No Law
of Moses, no decree of the Koran, no
magic crystal, no state of mind, or
anything or anyone can give you life but
Jesus, who is the Life, -"I
am the resurrection and the life; he who
believes in Me will live even if he
dies, and everyone who lives and
believes in Me will never die." (Jo.11)
No amount of Commandment keeping or good
works can produce this life - it can
only be gratefully received by those who
confess their sins, repent of practicing
them and receive Jesus as their Lord and
Savior.
When a person does this, he becomes a
holy temple for Jesus to live in. Jesus
will only live in a temple committed to
righteousness which is why we must first
turn from practicing sin and walk
obediently before the Lord.
