"Depart from
Me, accursed ones, into eternal fire
which has been prepared for the devil
and his angels." Matthew 25:41
If we take these words of Jesus
seriously, then we must accept the fact
that hell is a reality. From this text
we learn that hell was not originally
created for man but for the devil and
his demons. Of course, all who join his
rebellion against the will of God
deserve to be destroyed in this Lake of
Fire.
Many find it hard to believe that Jesus
talked more about hell than any other
subject. It must be because He doesn’t
want anyone to end up there. The Bible
says that God desires all men to come to
repentance and be saved from the wrath
to come.
Hell is called the "Lake of Fire" - "a
furnace of fire" - "a devouring fire" -
"a bottomless pit." It is a "place of
torments" - "where they cry for mercy" -
"where they weep" - "where they gnash
their teeth" - "where they have no rest"
- "a place of outer darkness." Hell is
where "sinners go" - "liars go" -
"drunkards go" - "swindlers go" -
"immoral persons go" - "homosexuals go"
- "unrighteous go" - "unbelievers go" -
"those whose name is not written in the
Lamb’s Book of Life go" - "those who
reject or neglect salvation go" - " a
place where God wants no man to go."
Sin cannot simply be forgiven, it has to
be dealt with. The Bible says that any
person who sins must die. (Ezek.18:4)
The Bible says that without the shedding
of blood there can be no forgiveness for
sin. The shedding of animal blood cannot
take away sin, only the sinless,
righteous sacrifice of a holy Savior
can. That has been provided in Christ
Jesus. For those who will not receive
that sacrifice, the Bible asks, -"How
can we escape if we neglect so great a
salvation?" (Heb.9:22) For
those all that remains is a "terrifying
expectation of a fiery judgment."
(Heb.10:27)
Sadly, in our time there are few who
believe that hell is real and of those
who do, even fewer believe the Bible
description of it. Jesus said, -"If
your right eye makes you stumble, tear
it out and throw it from you; for it is
better for you to lose one of the parts
of your body than for your whole body to
be thrown into hell." (Matt. 5:29) Many
allow wishful thinking to deceive them,
but if the Bible is true, and if Jesus
is the living Truth, then hell is a
reality.
