"Now it will
come about that in the last days the
Mountain of the House of the Lord will
be established as the chief of the
mountains, and will be raised above the
hills; And all the nations will stream
to it. And many peoples will come and
say, ‘Come, let us go up to the Mountain
of the Lord, to the House of the God of
Jacob; That He may teach us concerning
His ways and that we may walk in His
paths.’ for the Law will go forth from
Zion and the Word of the Lord from
Jerusalem." Isaiah 2:2-3
It seems that every time an election
cycle comes around there are those
promising change. But it seems the more
we "change" the more things stay the
same. Obviously, few people are content
with the way things are. It was never
God’s intention for man to govern
himself.
When God delivered Israel out of bondage
in Egypt He set them apart to be His own
possession. He promised to lead them, to
protect them and to provide for them.
But at some point the people became
discontented with God as their King and
demanded to have a king like the heathen
nations around them. God granted their
request but told them that in rejecting
Him as their King many serious problems
would arise. Still, the Israelites
insisted - they wanted change.
The original sin was basically the first
humans choosing to govern themselves.
They wanted the knowledge of both good
and evil and the authority to determine
for themselves what was good or evil.
The result was disastrous.
Soon after the flood, when people began
to grow in number, they exalted Nimrod
to rule over them. He quickly
established two capitals for his
kingdom, Babylon and Nineveh. Since that
time the world has had a bloody history
of conflicts and wars. In the almost
6000 years of recorded history there has
been less than 300 years of peace. If we
can learn from history, one glaring
truth cannot be denied - man cannot
justly rule himself.
God understands this well and at the
appointed time will finally put a stop
to the madness. Only God has the power
to forgive transgressors, and only the
Kingdom of God can stop evil, stop war,
destroy death, stop the suffering and
pain and free the creation itself from
the curse.
Isaiah 11 says that God will bring
about real change even among the
animals. They will be no more prey and
predators - the lion will lay down with
the lamb in that age. The "Mountain of
the Lord" in our text is the Government,
or Kingdom of God which Jesus will
establish on the earth at His return.
The "mountains" and "hills" are the
governments of the nations which will
come to God to learn His Law and His
ways.
In
that day God will be King over all and
real change will come at last.
