Did God or Moses write the Ten Commandments? Were the
Ten Commandments first given at Mt. Sinai or in the very
beginning in Eden? Were the Ten Commandments written
into stone by God’s own finger? What did God instruct
Moses to build to hold the stone tablets? Are the Ten
Commandments a part of the New Covenant? Did Jesus teach
the Ten Commandments? Were the Ten Commandments only
temporary until Jesus came? Did the early Church observe
them? Is it necessary to keep the Commandments in order
to be saved? Is it necessary to keep all the
Commandments. Is there teaching in the New Testament
Scriptures which show a change in Commandment
observance? Why did God give the Ten Commandments? Are
the Ten Commandments a part of the Gospel message? Does
faith in Christ make the Commandments void? Is the Devil
pleased when he sees New Testament Christians keep the
Commandments? Bible
Translation: NASV
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
1. Love God, and have no other gods before Him
2. Do not make or worship an idol
3. Don’t take God’s Name in vain
4. Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy |
5. Honor and Obey your Parents
6. Do not commit murder
7. Do not commit adultery
8. Do not steal
9. Do not lie or falsely accuse someone
10. Do not covet what belongs to another |
Jesus
said that the Ten Commandments were based upon love
toward God and love toward our fellow man. The first
four Commandments show man’s obligation to God, and the
last six show man’s obligation to man. Jesus taught that
all the Commandments were summed up in loving God with
all our heart, and loving our neighbor as we love
ourselves. Does God expect Christians to live by this
standard?
DEFINITIONS
Idol: Usually
a graven or carved image which represents a perceived
god. According to Scripture, an idol can be anything
which one puts before the true God. For example, the
Bible says that greed is a form of idolatry.
Vain: As
in taking God’s Name in vain. In its broadest sense it
means to take lightly. To use God’s Name in an
irreverent way. God has revealed His character and
nature through His Names. It is through His Names that
we understand that He is. . .our Savior, . . .our
Sacrifice,. . .our Deliverer, . . .our Healer, . . .our
Provider, etc. Therefore, to take His salvation,
sacrifice, healing, etc, lightly, is to take His Name in
vain.
Covet: To
wish that something which belongs to another belonged to
you. To covet is an unlawful desire which is motivated
and driven by selfishness which is the enemy of love.
Ark of the Covenant: A
wooden box overlaid with gold which God instructed Moses
to build to hold the two tablets of stone. Its top,
called the “Mercy Seat” represented the Throne of God
and was made of pure gold. “Ark of the Covenant” simply
means a “box to hold the terms of a Covenant.”
Covenant: A
covenant is an agreement between two or more parties.
When you purchase a house or perhaps an automobile you
enter into an covenant agreement with the seller. He
agrees to certain terms of the sale and you agree to
certain terms of the sale. If either party violates the
terms of the agreement they can be held liable. In this
case the contract is ratified by the signature of both
parties. In the Case with the Sinai Covenant and the 613
Laws written upon animal skins, it was ratified by the
blood of sacrificed animals. In the case of the New
Covenant (Abraham’s Covenant), it was ratified by the
sacrificial blood of Jesus.
DID THE COMMANDMENTS EXIST BEFORE
SINAI?
1. Did people know the
Ten Commandments from the beginning of creation? 1
John 3:4 / Romans 6:23 / Romans 5:12, 17-19 / Genesis

/ 2 Peter 2:5 / Genesis 7:5 / Genesis 9:1 / 2 Peter 2:5,
6 / 2 Peter 2:6-8 / Jude vs 7

Scripture__________
❖ Righteous Lot was tormented by the __________ __________of

Scripture__________
❖ Jude wrote that these people indulged in __________ ____________
Scripture__________
❖ Lot was a righteous man living among sinners who
practiced lawlessness. God’s judgment was terrible
indeed as He rained down fire from heaven to destroy the
wicked inhabitants of the city. To practice “lawless
deeds” means that they had been defying a standard of
Law set by God. If Lot knew these Sodomites were
lawless, isn’t it reasonable to believe that they knew
that they were not trying to live in obedience to the
true God?_______
Commentary: By
these Scriptures alone, we see that God had revealed the
second, the fourth , the sixth and the seventh
Commandments long before He gave them to Moses at Mt.
Sinai. Isn’t it reasonable to assume that God had given
them the other Commandments to have “no other gods”, to
“honor and obey parents”, to “not falsely accuse”, etc,
as well? During Noah’s time the world was filled with
sin, so one must ask -“what righteous standard was Noah
preaching?” For 120 years he preached a message of
righteousness with a call for all sinners to repent and
be saved from the coming flood. Obviously, the
inhabitants of the earth were living contrary to the
standard which God had set for them. And one must ask,
-“What righteous standard were the inhabitants of Sodom
and Gomorrah violating?”

Commentary: The
Ten Commandments were known from the beginning of
creation, long before God gave them to Moses at Sinai.
God spoke the Ten Commandments directly to the people,
where as He sent the Book of the Law through Moses.
Jesus taught that whoever relaxes even the least of the
Commandments would be ranked least in the Kingdom, and
told His followers that if they loved Him to keep the
Commandments. The true Christians living during the
Tribulation are those identified as holding the
testimony of Jesus and Keeping the Commandments of God. |
